  2. Organizing committee Thanks • Richard Seto(UCRiverside) • Jutta Escher (LLNL), Calvin Johnson (SDSU) • Nuclear Structure and Reactions, Nuclear Astrophysics • Brad Filippone (Caltech), Alan Poon (LBNL) • Symmetries, neutrinos, Underground expts, nucleon structure(i.e. JLAB) • Ken Barish (UCRiverside), Manuel Calderon (UCDavis) • Heavy Ions(RHIC, LHC) , nucleon structure (i.e. spin @RHIC) • Richard Hollis (UCR), Aneta Iordanova (UCR) • Our worker bees • Jim Thomas (LLNL) • Together with Ben, our sages • Ben Gibson (DNP/LANL) • Carol Kuc – our conference organizer

  3. What is our job? • 1 invited session (3 speakers) • Workshops (at most 3- ½ day) with up to 6-8 speakers each • Poster – we design it • Web site (clone from previous sites?) • Provide support staff at the meeting • Hotel and meeting facilities • I went on a scouting missing with Ben Gibson (DNP) and Carol Kuc (our conference coordinator) • Choices between LA city and Beach – the beach won

  4. Hyatt Regency Newport Beach • Oct 24-27, 2012: wed-sat noon • John Wayne Airport (10 min away – Shuttle service from Hyatt) • LAX (1hr – Commercial Shuttle or Taxi) • Parking available • Near to Newport Beach (15 min walk) and Fashion Island (15 min walk) – restaurants(all levels – reservations recommended for the higher level ones), shopping, beach activities, golf • The hotel can provide some shuttle service

  5. What do we do today? • Workshops – 3 place holders • I asked 3 groups to be in charge of this • Invited session – 1 placeholder (we will all work on this) • Here Ben has suggested as a starting point for discussion DNP physics done in Southern California • I need workshop/invited session placeholders for the Exec and Program Committee meetings Friday and Saturday • Poster – anyone want to take charge of this? • How do we work • Minimize the number of meetings – work by email but when deadlines approach I will want a short meeting

  6. Some advice and rules • Invited session should be coordinated with other sessions (even in other years – e.g. MSU) • Typically we don’t invite a speaker if he has already been invited in the last 2 years excluding workshops and mini-symposia

  7. workshops • Calvin and Jutta • And Here be Dragons: Understanding the Nature of Unstable Isotopes² • Goals of the workshop: Summarize key activities of ongoing low-energy nuclear structure and reactions research aimed at elucidating the nature of unstable nuclei. Highlight the overarching questions to be addressed by this research and issues to be resolved in the context of this work. Both theory and experiment will be covered. • Brad and Alan -Symmetries • ? • Ken and Manuel-Heavy Ions • ? • Invited Session • ?

  8. Accommodations etc • 403 guestrooms ( we will take the entire hotel) • Govt rate ($135/day, valid 3 days before and after meeting) • Parking, internet complimentary • Nice stuff – which most of us won’t use • Golf course, tennis course, 2 pools • Meeting rooms (scoped out by Carol, Ben and me) • 19 breakout rooms • 2 large meeting rooms (up to 600)
