  2. BIO-PLASTIC Biodegradable plastic HOW CAN PLASTIC BE HARMFUL? WHAT IS BIO PLASTIC ? Chemicals in plastic which give them their rigidity or flexibility (flame retardants, bisphenols, phthalates and other harmful chemicals) are oily poisons that repel water and stick to petroleum-based objects like plastic debris. So, the toxic chemicals that leach out of plastics can accumulate on other plastics. Bio Plastic is a plastic that are made from an organic material/ source. Quicker to decompose, good for the environment, the material used are easy to find. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DECOMPOSE? Plastic Bags: 200-1000 years Plastic Containers: 50-80 years Plastic Bottle: 450 years Not efficient, hard to mold, not sturdy. WHY IS PLASTIC HARD TO BREAKDOWN? Petroleum-based plastics like PET don't decompose the same way organic material does. This kind of decomposition requires sunlight, not bacteria. When UV rays strike plastic, they break the bonds holding the long molecular chain together. For more details about this event, www.reallygreatsite.com IS PLASTIC BIODEGRADABLE OR NOT? WHO INVENTED BIOPLASTIC? Incinerating non-biodegradable plastics will release carbon dioxide as well. Disposing of non-biodegradable plastics made from natural materials in anaerobic (landfill) environments will result in the plastic lasting for hundreds of years. Bacteria have developed the ability to degrade plastics. The first known bioplastic, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), was discovered in 1926 by a French researcher, Maurice Lemoigne, from his work with the bacterium Bacillus megaterium GROUP MEMBER Arsyi, Neyia, Lunya, Derryl
