  6. What we do know... • Accutane- yellowing of the teeth and bones • Thalidomide- Europe in the 1960s-deformed limbs

  7. What we DO know • COCAINE- low birth weight • “crack babies” • seem to “catch up” • MARIJUANA- more behavioral and mental problems (discipline)

  8. DES (diethylstilbestrol)-1950s and 1960s • Miscarriage • cervical cancer in females • infertility in males

  9. Illness and the fetus • Rubella- aka. German measles • first 8 wks of pregnancy-no effect • 8-16 wks: heart, deafness

  10. Stress and the Fetus • Diverts blood from the uterus • decreases oxygen to fetus • changes hormones • Changes brain structure
