  2. Aswan Dam • A large dam constructed across the Nile River • Reasons • The aim of this water project was to prevent the river's flooding, generate electricity and provide water for agriculture. • Floods used to be good, but as more people moved to the area, they needed to be controlled.

  3. Aswan Low Dam • Original dam was built in 1899 and raised three times.

  4. The High Dam replaced the Low Dam in 1970 Monument commemorating the Russian and Egyptian friendship after Russia helped Egypt finance the new dam construction.

  5. Benefits • Flood control • Hydroelectric production • Water conservation

  6. Drawbacks • Over 90,000 Nubians were displaced • In fact, they were relocated almost 400 miles away • Those down river of the dam do not have access to the water they always used to • It has impacted area wildlife • Ancient sites and a temple of the Nubians had to be removed and relocated
