  1. V RUSSIAN-INDIAN FORUM ON TRADE AND INVESTMENTS – Moscow, November 10, 2011 Panel discussion #3: RUSSIAN-INDIAN COLLABORATION IN THE PHARMACEUTICS AREA Glycosciences – NEW PRIORITY DIRECTION FOR RUSSIAN-INDIAN SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE DRUGS AND VACCINES N.E. Nifantiev Division of Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry, N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia nen@ioc.ac.ru

  2. ILTP Integrated Long Term Programme of Cooperation in Science & Technology between India and Russia  THE MAJOR FORUM FOR FACILITATING DIRECT INTERACTION BETWEEN SCIENTISTS OF INDIA AND RUSSIA

  3. NEW COLLABORATIVE DIRECTION: GLYCOSCIENCES Studies in the fields of carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry, glycobiology, glycotechnology and glycopharmacology which are named altogether the «glycosciences», were selected as one of the new priority area for bilateral collaboration within the Integrated Long Term Program (ILTP), which was recently extended for next ten year period. Key directions of this collaboration – studies towards the development of innovative glycotherapeutics, conjugated vaccines, diagnostics of cancer, infections, autoimmune diseases.

  4. Carbohydrate mediated cell recognition processes - targets for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics development Innovative products: Vaccines - antibacterial - antifungal (fungi, molds, yeasts) - antiviral - anticancer - antifertility etc. Diagnostics - carbohydrate antigens and - anti-carbohydrate antibodies Therapeutics - inhibitors and blockers of ligand-to-receptor interactions

  5. NEW COLLABORATIVE DIRECTION: GLYCOSCIENCES Russian-Indian stirring committee on glycosciences Co-chairs: Professor Nikolay E. Nifantiev, Natural Products & MedChem, Zelinsky Institute RAS, Moscow Professor Krishna N. 6. NEW COLLABORATIVE DIRECTION: GLYCOSCIENCES Specified first priority subjects for joint investigations inglycosciences:1. Synthesis, conformational analysis, biosynthesis and biological studies of carbohydrate antigenic ligands related to fungal and parasitic cell-wall.2. Bacterial lipopolysaccharides – structure, functions and biosynthesis.3. Marine carbohydrates: fucoidans and other seaweed polysaccharides, glycosylated steroids etc.4. Plant and wood polysaccharides.

  7. ILTP GLYCOSCIENCES • Current State: • Complimentary expertises were specified • Stirring committee on glycosciences was formed • Priority directions were selected • Bilateral Research Program is under development - to • be supported by Ministries from Russia and India
