  4. Philip II and Divine Right • Palace: Escorial • Expanded Spanish influence, Catholic Church • Absolute Monarch: ruler with complete authority over the lives of the people • Divine Right: Authority to rule came directly from God

  5. The Wars of Philip II • Battle of Lepanto: defeated Ottomans • Revolt in Netherlands (Dutch) = Protestant Rebels, became independent • Attempted to invade England (Protestant)= Spanish Armada • 130 ships, 20,000 men • Terrible storm, English use to weather

  6. Spanish Golden Age • Siglo de oro = Golden Century • Philip II was a patron of the arts • El Greco aka the Greek • Diego Velazquez

  7. Miguel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, the first modern novel in Europe • Pokes fun at chivalry and middle ages

  8. Economic Decline • Kings after Philip II were not very good • Wars cost great deal of $$$$$ • Inflation and taxes • Kicked out Muslims and Jews • France took over as most powerful European nation
