  1. Context as Service Enabler • Dr. Stephan Rupp • s.rupp@alcatel.de

  2. Context as Service Enabler • Interactive communication environmments • Situation specific context – a practical example • Service components and challenges for research

  4. Context as Service Enabler • Interactive communication environmments • Situation specific context – a practical example • Service components and challenges for research

  5. Personalised Workplace • Example: Log in anywhere • Automatically activate all collocated devices (e.g. telephone) and resources. • Up-date own presence. • Redirect incoming calls from mobile set to fixed line. • Redirect Instant Messaging from PDA to PC. CDA CDA: Collocated Device Authentication

  6. External view on individual presence Calling Card Select a „Calling Card“ from directory- displays presence - contains personal preferences Calling Card Presence Update Click to dial Available applications Preferred device is ringing

  7. Reflect user relations by calling cards Alice‘s personal watcherpreference groups Alice‘s Calling Cardpresentation for the different persons Person family her friend VIP important customer collegue Lucia regular anyone

  8. Context as Service Enabler • Interactive communication environmments • Situation specific context – a practical example • Service components and challenges for research

  9. Service components for context based communication • Unique user identity across domains, devices and apps • Groups multiple devices and applications to • co-located devices • managed as one logical multi-apps device • single authenticaton • Seamless session mobility between co-located devices across domains in a user friendly way (by simply lifting the handset) • Presence aggregation/instantaneous update/activity observation • Calling Cards used for presence, preference and click to dial (implementation based on Web Services, SIP)

  10. Principles of a “rich presence” architecture IMing In the office Idle Customers On the phone y Be right back s Outsiders Bu Aggregated Presence My Group My Boss statefuluser activityfilter Devices/ applications • Aggregation • Presentation of presence information in a meaningful way • Presence sources can be a group of devices and applications • User control via Preferences and Filtering • Different groups see aggregated presence in different ways • dynamic adaptation of presence according to the user’s communication activity • Rich Presence provisioning to legacy devices Filtering / Preferences Aggregation Group specificfilter policy Presence Sources

  11. More Context: Personal Assistants ? A practical view: who will administer all this intelligence? • Always and and everywhere at your disposal: Elvis, the personal assistant. • “Elvis, pls. show me the construction drawing of this system!” • “Elvis, what type of valve is this?” • “Elvis, show me the way to the switching centre!” • A multi modal concept (“AAAA”). AAAA: Anything, Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow

  12. Challenges for research • Rising complexity: make it self organising and easy to handle for end user. Enabling technologies: • “zero configuration” technologies in combination with semantic classification • Published domain models with the ability to grow in a community development (like open source software) • Security issues: loss of privacy, but also malicious software and attacks against distributed service infrastructure • Collaborative work: information and production tools become accessible to everyone. Collaborative work needs new role models, tools and value chains.
