What it is • The bang theory was created as an explanation to how the universe started. • It basically states that there was nothing in space except darkness and then there was a singularity that expanded and cooled to form the universe, and everything in it, as it is today. http://www.greaterspams.com/images/singularity.jpg
When it happened and where it came from • The big bang would have occurred approximately 13.7 billion years ago. • It came from a singularity which is a zone of intense density inside of a black hole. (Black holes are areas in space of intense pressure.) • The singularity that is thought to have started it all has no known reason of where it came from and why it supposedly created the universe. • The theory is that it grew larger, cooled, and expanded from a very, very hot and very, very small object to form our universe at its current temperature and size.
Misinterpretations of the Big Bang Theory • One misinterpretation of the big bang theory is that it was a huge explosion and then the universe was formed, when the theory is actually that it was like a balloon expanding and expanding to form the universe. • Another misinterpretation of the big bang theory is that the singularity was a fireball that just appeared somewhere in space. The theory is that there was no space before the big bang and that it was created in the big bang.
Evidence of the Big Bang Theory • First, scientists are fairly certain that the universe had some sort of beginning. • Second, the other galaxies appear to be moving away from ours at a speed that is relative to its distance which supports the theory that the universe was once compacted. • Third, if the universe did start out as really, really hot as the big bang theory suggests, then scientists should be able to find some sort of evidence of this heat. In 1965, this evidence was found. • Finally, helium and hydrogen (AKA, the “light elements”) found in the universe are evidence of the big bang’s origin
Photo Evidence of the Big Bang Theory • In recent years, NASA’s Hubble Space telescope has been getting closer to revealing images of the farthest galaxies ever seen, from the universe 400 million years ago. • Called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, the image depicts the first galaxies to come out from the so-called “dark ages,” the time after the Big Bang when the first stars reheated the universe. • These images were taken in 1985 and 1988, by NASA’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), and Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS).
Only Theory? • The Big Bang theory is not the only theory of how the universe was created, it is simply the most popular theory • There are many different types of models that can be used to explain creation of the universe, but the Big Bang Theory is supported by all observational evidence • Many scientists believe it works best to explain the creation of the universe, although it is controversial http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/starsgalaxies/hubble_UDF.html
