  1. Non Fiction Texts and their text features

  2. Title Identifies the topic of the text/tells what the text will be about. Based on the title…what do you think the article is about?

  3. Table ofContents Tells the names of chapters/articles/passages and the page the chapters/articles/passages can be found. When might this be useful?

  4. Glossary Tells the definitions of some of the words in the text.

  5. Index Tells what pages a reader can find certain topics.

  6. Heading Divides the text into sections and explains what the sections will be about.

  7. Photographs and Illustrations Shows what something looks like Caption: explains what a photograph or illustration is about .

  8. Charts/Graphs, and Tables Organizes and helps compare information in a visual way that is easier to read.

  9. Map Shows where places/events are located

  10. Bold Print &Italics Bold print and italics are used to make important words stand out.

  11. Footnote an explanatory note inserted at the bottom of the page referring to a specific word or phrase in the text.

  12. Makes lists easier to read and understand.

  13. Deck/Introduction

  14. DEFINE: The overall structure of a piece of text. Example: If a student were asked the format of her paper, she might respond by saying “It has one inch margins, Times New Roman font, and single spaced.”

  16. Directions: Word of Advice: Cut and paste as you go incase you run low on time.
