Bookends Frances and Goodrich start the play with Mr. Frank after the war, then zoom in on his family’s time in the hidden annex, then finish with Mr. Frank after the war – like a pair of bookends. What kind of effect does this have? What is it like to know a little of what happened to Mr. Frank before we read the story? What is it like to know who survives & who doesn’t?

  4. Grief Grief Imagine you were Otto Frank there in the room, seeing your families things. All the memories. So many memories. What would be going through your mind and emotions? What would you be feeling to tell Miep to burn everything, to get rid of it all?

  6. Sharing The Franks share everything in the Annex with the Van Daans. How would you feel doing that? Is it difficult to share? Would it make it easier if you knew that, out in the city, the people might be captured by the Nazis? And would it be difficult to want to let more people in? Why/why not?

  8. Labels How would you feel if society was allowed to and encouraged to label you a certain way? Has anyone ever labeled you something? What was that experience like? What has it been like to see other people labeled certain words? What do you think about the people using the labels? What if it was the law that you be labeled so that everyone could know what you were?

  10. Locked Up When they went into hiding, Anne said she was going to pretend and imagine they were living in a summer vacation house. She had the knack of using her imagination to feel better about her situation. If you were stuck in the same house for two years, how would you spend your time? How would you feel?

  12. Quiet In the Annex, they have to be completely silent during the daytime, so no one will know that they’re hiding there. What would be the hardest parts of this for you? What parts would get easier as the months passed? Why? What parts would get more difficult? Why?

  14. Living Quarters Anne has to sleep in the same room as Mr. Dussel. Girls: How would you feel sharing a room with an older man? Guys: How would you feel sharing a room with an older woman? All: How much privacy would you need?

  16. Competition Three teenagers are living in the Annex: Anne, Margot, and Peter. What would it be like being thrown into the same living space together like that? What do you think would happen if there was only one boy or girl with you for a couple of years? Would competition build up between your brother or sister? Or would you absolutely not be interested in some random stranger you’re forced to live with?

  18. Diaries What are your thoughts about diaries and journals? Have you ever had one? Why / why not? What do you think about journals? Why do you (or people) write in them? Whom are they writing to? Would you write different things if you knew someone would be reading your words someday (like Anne’s)?

  20. Hiding At one point, Anne realizes that she can’t go downstairs or outside at all. How would that feel? What would you miss the most about the outside? What would be the hardest? Which parts of living in the same place might you actually grow to like?

  22. Undignified When Anne steals Peter’s shoes and takes off running, Peter chases after her. They end up on the floor, wrestling for the shoes. Anne’s mom calls her actions “not dignified.” What does she mean? Why isn’t it dignified for Anne? How is her opinion affected by the time period the story takes place? Would her thoughts about their wrestling be different today? How? Why?

  24. Injustice When Mr. Frank asks Miep to supply food when they go into hiding, she immediately says “Yes.” Her choice carried immense risk. When you see people’s right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness being taken away, what do you do? Do you stand beside the victim? Even if you might get hurt too? How much would you risk for other people’s rights? Why? Why not?

  26. The Blame Game Anne says, “If we begin thinking of all the horror in the world, we’re lost! We’re trying to hold onto some kind of ideals … when everything … ideals, hopes … everything, are being destroyed! It isn’t our fault that the world is in such a mess! We weren’t around when all this started!” What responsibility do we have to fight & fix the world’s horrors, even when it’s not our fault?

  28. Nightmares Do you ever have nightmares? How do you feel when you wake up? What kinds of feelings do the nightmares make you have? Has anyone ever seen you having them? What was it like waking up, knowing they saw you having a nightmare? What might if feel like having nightmares like Anne while you’re in hiding from the Nazis? How might that change them?

  30. Gifts When Anne surprises everyone with Hanukkah gifts, they are all amazed. What do you think about her gifts? What do Anne’s gifts show about her as a character and person? Talk about a memory where you invested as much effort as Anne to give a special gift. If you don’t have a memory, talk about why you think you don’t feel like giving gifts the way Anne does.

  32. World Problems Anne blames the world’s problems on her parents and their generation and doesn’t feel like she has any responsibility to fix any of them because she didn’t make them happen. What do you think about the big world problems? Whose fault are they? Whose responsibility are they to be fixed? How much of an obligation do we have to make parts of the world better when we didn’t cause the problems?

  34. Generations Many of Anne and her mother’s fights are because of “how things were” when they were growing up. Edith can’t believe some of the things Anne does and wishes she’d act the right way. Anne argues back, saying that things are different now. What ways are your teenage years different from your parents’? What struggles do you have that they didn’t have to deal with?
