  5. Commercial Fishing • Using sonar, giant nets, and trawls, fisherman have taken too many fish to be replenished, effecting the entire ecosystem • Sustainable fishing includes • Preserving spawning grounds • Limiting catches • Improving technology to avoid damage

  6. Sustainable Development • In modern society, “development” and “sustainability” are quite opposite • Some people believe that humans can not prosper without development • “Developed” countries exploit their resources

  7. Biosphere Reserves • A sustainable way to meet human needs • Created by the United Nations • Goals: • Maintain biodiversity • Experiment to find new ways to sustainably survive

  8. Biosphere Reserves • A Biosphere contains • Core reserve: inner area for research and sustainable uses • Buffer zone: second layer permits small impact activity and development • Transition area: outer layer supports settlements, tourism, fishing, agriculture
