  2. What’s in this module? • Contents: • heat • thermodynamics • statistical mechanics • Interactive teaching: • you will be asked questions (shock horror) • you should ask me questions (revenge!)

  3. Multiple choice system • Throughout the lectures, your understanding of concepts will be cemented by multiple choice questions: • First find answer yourself (about 1 minute) • Discuss with people around you (1–2 minutes)

  4. Tutorials • Two types: • Short questions mainly from Young & Freedman • Longer more general questions • Try to solve problems yourself as much as you can • Ask tutor/neighbour if you get stuck

  5. Recommended text books • Any book that works for you • Young & Freedman, University Physics • Mansfield & O’Sullivan, Understanding Physics • Giancoli, Physics for Scientists Advanced texts • Baierlein, Thermal Physics • Dugdale, Entropy and Its Physical Meaning

  6. Course overview • The atomic hypothesis • Heat and heat transfer • Kinetic theory • The Boltzmann factor • The First Law of Thermodynamics • Specific Heat • Entropy • Heat engines • Phase transitions
