  1. 6-5.4 Explain the role of the Roman Catholic Church in medieval Europe.

  2. ENVIRONMENT Where do we live? What resources do we have? What are my responsibilities?

  3. What is the importance of the Church? • After the fall of Rome, the Catholic Church became the greatest source of stability in Western Europe.

  4. What is a monastery? • A monastery is a place where people could separate themselves from society and live a life of isolationin their dedication to God.

  5. What impact did monasteries have? • Monasteries became centers of learning and sustainers of culture in two major ways.

  6. How did monasteries become centers of learning? • 1. They preserved Christian writings, mainly the Bible. • 2. Charlemagne wanted to educate boys to train them for the priesthood.

  7. How was the Bible preserved? • Monks produced hand-made copies and passed them down.

  8. What happened to many monasteries? • Many monastic learning centers became the first universities. • The first university developed from the monastic school at Notre Dame Cathedral.

  9. What could you study at the first universities? • THEOLOGY – Study of God.

  10. What was the goal of the Church? • The primary goal of the Roman Catholic Church was to convert people into Christians.
