CSE 3 Fluency With Information Technology A Year in CSE 3 By: Andrew Honda Visual Programming With Scratch Image manipulation with Photoshop Overview Scratch is a programming application that was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is aimed towards childen to get them interested in computers and allow them to explore computers easily. All three major operating systems, Windows, Mac OSX and Linux, can run Scratch making it a very versatile application. Scratch has a very vibrant online community. Online members can share their various projects. This allows other people to download and manipulate the projects allowing for an amazing variety and complexity. In today’s world images are often manipulated to improve the appeal of a photo or to make it easier to present data. It is useful to understand the process that goes into this so you can better understand and recognize photo manipulation. Fluency in Information Technology (IT) means having a basic understand of how computers work, a understanding of basic programming, an understanding of basic important computer applications, and ability to technologically analyze and present data. Computational thinking Computational thinking is a relatively recent term that arose because of the new trend of using many techniques in computer science to solver various problems. It is useful because it allows for a new approach to solving problems often leading to an increased efficiency. L Making information available with web pages and HTML Data Analysis and visualization with Excel Widely used program to interpret and present data, especially in the financial industry. We created charts showing the water temperature off the California coast as measure by a science buoy. The large number of data points allowed us to get experience dealing with the amount of data that we can expect to deal with in the real world.
