  1. Imagine you were there…You live in a small farming village on one of the islands of Japan. You’re very happy with your life. The sea is nearby & food is plentiful. You have a large, extended family to protect and take care of you. Your grandmother says that life in your village has not changed for hundreds of years, & that is good. But now you have heard that some people from across the sea are coming to your village. They are bringing new ideas & new ways of doing things. How do you feel about these changes? Do Now

Geography of Japan • Island of Japan are the tops of undersea mountains & volcanoes • Ring of Fire • Mountainous country • Nearness to sea has shaped the history of Japan • Seafood key part of diet for thousands of years • Island living has enabled them to develop own culture • Short distance to Korea & China has had heavy influence

Early Japanese society • Ainu • Believed came from Siberia • Early Japanese people lived in small farming clans • Clan chiefs believed to be descendants from Kami • Led rituals to honor ancestors eventually became Shinto • By mid 500s- Yamato clan grew in power • 1st to call themselves emperor of Japan.
