3. The Enlightenment was a thriving intellectual period during the 1700s. • Famous Philosophers: • John Locke • Montesquieu • Jean Jacques Rousseau • Famous Ideas: • Natural Rights (3 of them) • Separation of Powers • Social Contract Enlightenment

4. John Locke’s Philosophy • There are certain natural rights endowed to all human beings. They deserve these things just for being born. • life, liberty, property!

6. Montesquieu’s Philosophy • Three types of government: • Despotism • Monarchy • Republic • A separation of political powersguaranteed freedom and liberty.

7. Rousseau’s Philosophy • In his book The Social Contract: • The right kind of political order could make people truly moral and free. • Individual moral freedom could be achieved only by learning to subject one’s individual interests to the “General Will.” • Individuals did this by entering into a social contract not with their rulers, but with each other. • This social contract was derived from human nature, not from history, tradition, or the Bible.
