  1. Introduction to The BECOTEPS project Workshop on the opportunities for new business concepts with the combined non-food biomass chains 7th October 2009 Antoine Peeters, EuropaBio - SusChem

  2. BECOTEPSWhat does it stand for? The Bio-Economy Technology Platforms join forces to address synergies and gaps between their Strategic Research Agendas

  3. Objectives Contribute to the creation of a strong KBBE in Europe • Achieve closer and more coordinated collaboration between KBBE ETPs • Develop recommendations - White Paper • How to improve interaction between the KBBE stakeholders • The product chains and sustainability issues • Multidisciplinary research - innovation - policy issues • Encourage discussions • Between European and national, public and private, research and innovation initiatives • To foster the implementation of the ETPs’ Strategic Research Agendas • To set priorities on future research and innovation challenges

  4. The White Paper • Recommendations for coherent European policies in the KBBE area • To be discussed with European Commission, European Parliament, Member States, stakeholders,… • To be fine-tuned according to recommendations • The final BECOTEPS White Paper will be disseminated to KBBE stakeholders (ETPs, national TPs, national and European research funding organisation, relevant networks, European institutions, press, etc.)

  5. Work Package 1: Coordinating collaboration of KBBE ETPs Lead: Objective: How: • Plant for the Future ETP • Ensure a closer and more coordinated collaborationbetween KBBE ETPs • KBBE forum – brainstorm + KBBE ETP actions • Encourage inter-ETP working groups • Coordination project - One stop shop KBBE • Communication via webpage • Management EC reporting, contacts, resources

  6. Work Package 2: Topical Workshops of KBBE Experts Lead: Objective: • Food for Life ETP • Bring together KBBE interested stakeholders for a dialogue on a coordinated approach to develop KBBE in Europe • Address synergies and gaps between the ETPs • Address important issues for society, business, research • Develop a White Paper based on workshops recommendations

  7. Workshops (I) • Opportunities for new business concepts with the combined non-food biomass chains under the KBBE umbrella • Objective: to improve collaboration and cooperation between stakeholders in the forest-based and agricultural biomass users & to achieve a better understanding of boundaries and hurdles that hinder combined biomass production and utilisation, including thoughts for lead market activities • Date and venue: 7/8 October 2009, Brussels • Contact: Forest-based ETP • Optimising Trust and Collaboration in the Food and Feed Supply Chain • Objective: to improve competitiveness of Europe’s food, feed, agricultural and seed industries by reducing barriers to uptake of new and improved technologies and insights • Date and venue: 26/27 October 2009, Brussels • Contact: Sustainable Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction ETP

  8. Workshops (II) • A Sustainable KBBE – Opportunities for Europe and beyond • Objective: to investigate solutions for achieving sustainable (economically and environmentally viable) biomass production by addressing the impact on and by climate change and land use to the establishment of KBBE • Date and venue: 24/25 November 2009, Brussels • Contact: Sustainable Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction ETP

  9. Work Package 3: Define research challenges and dissemination Lead: Objective: How: • Sustainable Chemistry ETP • Raise awareness of the potential and needs of the KBBE among Member States and encourage their coordination • Define future research and innovation challenges to further develop the KBBE - Disseminate to national and European funding organisations and ministries • Organise meetings with Member States representatives, several DGs of the EC • Contribute to the EC KBBE 2010 Conference
