  1. Animal Adaptations

  2. 0507.5.1 Identify physical and behavioral adaptations that enable animals such as amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, and mammals to survive in a particular environment.

  3. vocabulary Adaptation- a body part that helps an organism survive in its environment Vertebrate – an animal with a back bone Life cycle – all the stages an organism goes through from beginning of life to death

  4. Adaptations – Study jams http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm

  5. Focus Questions How do animals live in places that are so hot, cold, wet, or dark? 2.Which animals are more likely to share an environment with a Jack rabbit? 3.Pretend that you are an animal that lives in the Artic; what adaptations would you need to live there?

  6. TCAP Coach Model how to extract information from the text – Pg 49-51 (fish, amphibians, reptile) Group Work - birds Independent practice- mammals

  7. Fish (adaptation for watery environment) Fins Breathes through gills instead of lungs Chemical to keep cold climate fish from freezing

  8. Amphibian Begin life in water - breathes with gills instead of lungs- swims using a tail 2nd part of life on land – develops legs and lungs Life cycle includes stages- eggs, larva(tadpole, adult)

  9. Reptile- snake and lizard Body temp goes up and down along with temperature of their environment Scales to hold in water Behaviors to survive- nocturnal because its cooler – under rock in the daytime

  10. Bird Bodies adapted for flight ------Light weight bones Wings instead of arms ---------Covered with feathers (warmth and flight) Water birds give of oils from their skin to make them waterproof Various shaped feet to help them live or eat in their environment (webbed, grasping, wading, and raptor) Various shaped beaks to help get and eat food (leaves seeds, fruit, insect, grub)

  11. Mammal Cold environment - Fur to keep warm and camouflage (ex. Polar bear) Blubber – layer of fat to keep water mammals and polar bears warm in a cold environment Desert mammals – large ears to stay cool Drink almost no water –able to get all the water they need from the food they eat

  12. Focus Questions How do animals live in places that are so hot, cold, wet, or dark? 2.Which animals are more likely to share an environment with a Jack rabbit? 3.Pretend that you are an animal that lives in the Artic; what adaptations would you need to live there?

  13. Group- use notes to find the page the information is on. 10 minutes

  14. Place an x in the correct box for each animal and write it’s adaptation citing the text.

  15. Quick End An _____________ is a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive in is environment. (knowledge) 2.Can you list one example for each: fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal? (application) 3.There are two types of adaptation. What are they? Explain how a bear uses both to survive in its habitat. (analysis

  16. Adaptations – Study jams http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm Whiteboard questions.
