Early Life • Born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, OH • Mother was single and had Charles at 16 • Referred to as a frequent drunk and spent numerous years in jail • Manson spent little time with his family growing up • Mother was unable to take care of him • Spent time in numerous family member’s homes • Did stunts in various boys homes and special reform schools
Early Life • At age nine, Manson was already committing crimes • Stealing • Burglary • Breaking and Entering • Manson was in jail more in his life, than he was not.
Music Career • While in jail, Manson discovered a love for music • Wrote many songs and played the steel guitar • Believed that once he was out of prison, he would become famous
The Followers • On March of 1967, Manson was released from jail and headed to San Francisco with a guitar and drugs • Once there, he developed a following, later to be known as “The Family” • The Family traveled across California together, recruiting people to join their cult • The Family would play a bigger role in the future events to come
Helter Skelter • After gaining popularity, Manson developed his own philosophy and power • Compared himself to the Devil • Had ultimate power • When the Beatles released their song “Helter Skelter” in 1969, Manson believed this was a prediction of a future race war • Blacks were going to rise up and slaughter all white people • Manson told his followers that the only way they would be saved was to live underground
The Manson Murders • August 9th, 1969 Manson and four of his followers break into 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles • Former home of Terry Melcher, a man who promised to help Manson with his music career but never did • Little did Manson know, Melcher had moved out and actress Sharon Tateand her husband Roman Polanskihad rented the house
The Manson Murders • Once in the home, Manson and his follows brudely murdered Tate, who was pregnant, and four others that were visiting the couple (Polanski was away on a business trip) • Trademarks of the Manson murders: • Words written in blood • Words carved on the victims bodies • WAR • PIG

The Aftermath • It took several months to determine who the murderers were • December of 1969- Manson and his followers were arrested • January 1970- Manson was convicted of 9 counts of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder • March 1971– Manson sentenced to death • 1972 – Manson’s death penalty was removed due to California’s removal of the death penalty • Has been in the California State Prison for over 4 decades
