  1. Celebrating 20 years of excellence Graduates 1994-2013 Kalamalka Secondary School Open House

  2. Kalamalka Secondary School • “Towards Honour and Excellence”

  3. Agenda • Welcome • A brief overview of past and current student achievement • Some future initiatives • An opportunity to mingle with staff and discuss

  4. 20 Years of Excellence • Academic success • Excellence beyond academia

  5. Academic Excellence • Provincial exam results • Graduation with ‘Honours’

  6. Results • All students in BC write common provincial exams in English 10, Science 10, Math 10, Social Studies 11, and English 12. Many academic grade 12 courses had mandatory exams up until 2008, then optional exams until 2011. • KAL exam results have been consistently above the provincial average in ALL examinable courses. • Provincial exam ‘percentile’ scores have been outstanding over the years in many courses

  7. Percentile scores

  8. Academic Success • Over the past two decades, KAL students have scored extremely well on Provincial exams. Some examples: • English 12 (average results above 75th) • Social Studies 11 (average result above 90th) • Math 12 (average result above 85th) • Physics 12 (98th percentile in 2004) • History 12 (average result above 80th) • Geography 12 (average result above 90th)

  9. Graduating with “Honours” • Students who graduate with a “B” average, 73% or higher are considered to have graduated with “Honours”. • At KAL, the percentage of graduates with “Honours” is typically 10% higher than the provincial average. Eg, 2011, Provincial rate was 47.5%, SD22 District rate was 51.6%, KAL rate was 60%

  10. Beyond Academia • Art • Theatre • Music • Applied Skills • Athletics • Clubs

  11. Scholarships • KAL Grads represent about 20% of SD#22 graduates each year. • Over the last three years KAL Grads have earned 31% of the Provincial Exam Scholarships in the District and 30% of the District Project Scholarships (Applied Skill or Fine Arts presentation or performance)

  12. Future Initiatives • Pursuing your Passion! • Increasing Advanced Placement opportunities • Acceleration, Accommodation, and Personalization of Individual education plans

  13. Pursuing Your Passion!!! • This Spring we are excited to pilot our “Pursuing Your Passion” program • Opportunity for students and staff to connect their learning with something they are ‘passionate’ about • Multi-age, student-driven focus first two weeks of March • The opportunities are endless

  14. Advanced Placement Courses • AP courses follow a rigorous curriculum that culminates in an exam. Score high enough and you earn ‘university credit’ for the course. • AP Literature, AP Studio Art, AP Calculus, AP Psychology • Possible expansion to include: AP History, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Geography…

  15. Acceleration, Accommodation, and Personalization • Acceleration – many students want to ‘accelerate’ their high school education so that they may begin a ‘trade’ early, enter the workforce, travel, or continue their academic pursuits at post-secondary • Accommodation – we take pride in supporting our students as they pursue their interests in athletics, fine arts, or other outside interests • Personalization – we support and encourage students to ‘build’ their own education plan

  16. Thank You! • Please join us in the Commons area for a chance to share your ideas with staff, ask questions, and learn more about some of the opportunities for your son or daughter to take their learning to the next level
