What HPV is and how it’s transmitted • Human papillomaviruses are a group of more than 100 viruses • They are called papillomaviruses because certain types may cause papillomas (or warts), which are benign tumors • HPV is a sexually transmitted disease • HPV can cause genital warts • Approximately 1% of sexually active adults in the united States have visible genital warts at any point in time

HPV Cancer • About 15 types of HPV infection cause virtually all cases of cervical cancer • HPV type 16 is accountable for nearly 50% of cervical cancer • HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35 are all related to cervical cancer • Anal cancer, vulver cancer, and penile cancer and lung cancer • In 2007 11,000 women were diagnosed with HPV cancer, 4,000 died

  6. Cures for HPV • Cryotherapy is freezing the abnormal cells with liquid nitrogen • Conization, also known as a cone biopsy, removes the abnormal cell areas • LEEP or Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure is when abnormal cells are removed with a painless electrical current

HPV vaccine • Vaccine Gardasil was released in 2006 • Women that take the vaccine between ages 9-26 have a lowered risk of getting a cancerous HPV • Protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70% of cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts • The vaccine is highly effective for women who haven't been exposed to any HPV types in the past
