Box and Whisker Plots—what are they? • Help interpret data and the way data is distributed • Show variability in data • Picture representation of data • Show the median, quartiles (other “special” medians!) • Can be drawn vertically or horizontally • Segments extending from the box are called “whiskers” • Whiskers stop at the highest and lowest values called “extremes” UNLESS there is an outlier! • Outliers are represented with a single dot • Each whisker & part of the box represents 25% (1/4) of the data

Steps to make a BWP • 1) Order the data from LEAST to GREATEST • 2) Identify the lower and upper EXTREMES • 3) Find the median (a.k.a. “Q2”) • 4) Find the Q1: median of the lower half of the data Find the Q3: median of the upper half of the data • 5) Graph the 5 points you just found ABOVE a # line • 6) Connect the points to make it look like the BWP! Let’s go try some together…

What are the similarities and differences of EVEN vs. ODD amounts of numbers in the data set? • EVEN: 2 4 4 7 8 9 9 11 11 13 • Median is the average of the 2 middle numbers! • 8 + 9 = 17 17/2 = 8.5 • After that, split data in half and include the numbers you used for the median to begin finding your Q! and Q3 • 2 4 4 7 8 9 9 11 11 13
