Norma Kamali • Norma Kamali was born on June 27, 1945 in New York City. She loved clothing and using creativity as a child and decided to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. Kamali graduated in 1964. Four years later she opened up her first shop on 229 East 53 Street in New York. Kamali had many advertisements in magazines to make people aware of her designs. She shortly moved her location to Madison Avenue where her designs for clothing made out of silk parachutes took off. Once the parachute craze had passed, she created the first sleeping bag coat. Little did she know, her life of fame was about to change. Kamali thought of the idea while camping with her boyfriend. She got up in the middle of the night and had to walk to the bathroom. As she walked, she wrapped herself in her sleeping bag and thought about how great it would be if the sleeping bags had sleeves. Making sleeping bag coats kicked off her success and transitioned her into designing other variations of thick coats. Many of the jackets and coats she made had large shoulder pads. The trend of an obvious shoulder made its way into her fleece dresses and tops. Two years later, in 1977, Norma Kamali began designing swim wear. She created the “pull bikini”. Her talent was awarded by a Coty Award for Design Innovation in 1981. Kamali also created lines for beauty, clothing, and health. Another popular design that she made was making garments, such as dresses or skirts out of fleece. This was a smart decision because the material was wise profitably, and fleece was not known to be used for anything other than sweat shirts and sweat pants. In addition to her own company, Kamali designed clothes for companies such as Tharp’s New Company, Everlast, and Walmart. Kamali had her own line of couture clothing names Kamali Kouture where designed eveningwear. She was the first clothing designer to make a shop to sell her clothes through ebay and immerse herself in the use of the internet. Today Kamali continues designing collections of sportswear and swimwear under her own company called Norma Kamali.
Calvin Klein • Calvin Klein was born on November 19th of 1942. He attended the High School of Design and Arts where he studied fashion design. Klein launched his own line in 1968 where he designed coats. In 1970 Klein began designing sportswear because he found that designing coats was too seasonal. He designed clothing for both men and women. Klein’s style was very simplistic and business casual. His collections received a Coty award consecutively for three years, beginning in 1973. He greatly influenced American trends and Vogue called his work “a definitive picture of the American look.” Klein continued making coats, in addition to jackets, collared shirts, loose skirts, and men's trousers. Both styles for men and women consisted of a sophisticated, clean look. In the late 1970’s, early 1980’s, Calvin Klein released his first line of designer jeans. He began designing jeans when he agreed to have a license with the Puritan Fashion Company. After his jean designs peaked in the early 1980’s, he bought back his jeans license from the Puritan Fashion Company. He had 15 year old Brooke Shields advertise the garment and imply seductive meanings. Klein created a logo that included his name and was then embroidered on the back pocket of the jean. During the release of the jean, Klein recreated the meaning of men’s underwear. He advertised them on a billboard with a strong, young man wearing nothing but the underwear. Millions of pairs were sold that year which helped his business tremendously. Calvin Klein became extremely successful thanks to the production of his denim jeans as well as the under garments. Most of the advertisements from then on out portrayed individuals in a more vulgar state then what was popular during that time. Today Calvin Klein continues making clothing in a similar style.
