    How many people here have poked, nudged, or tweeted in the last week? Posted photos, video? Commented on a newspaper editorial? Researched how to field-dress a moose on Sarah Palin’s blog? It’s all part of Social Networking, and it’s where we’re all headed, like it or not. SN is overwhelming. SN is over your head. SN is not over, though the site you’re so keen on may be so “last week” How many people here have poked, nudged, or tweeted in the last week? Posted photos, video? Commented on a newspaper editorial?     It’s great for building loyalty and connection to consumers. Social networks are just that, social, with much better potential for getting to know customers on a more intimate level. You're a close-knit bunch who spend a lot of time together and you're used to being able to say and do pretty much whatever you want because you're in the company of friends who know intimate details of each other's lives. Then, it all begins to be horribly wrong. First Helga walks in. "Don't be sucking!" she hollers in her thick German accent. "I love leather!" Your guests begin to move slowly backwards across the room, unsure what to do about the white-clad dominatrix who's invaded the party. But Helga's not alone. She's brought along the incredibly creepy Burger King () with her. He's been chillin' with Square, who tails the King into the room and proceeds to drop Wendy's wrappers on the carpet. You think things have gotten as bad as they can get, but then you look outside the door and see that the entire US Airforce is out there. It's going to be a bad night.     Don't jump in with both feet and begin posting content. Don't have a "self promotion" agenda. Don't submit press releases. Don't "check your brain at the door" before submitting content. Take time to familiarize yourself with the site and its community, vote and comment of items you find interesting, and add friends as you find others that post interesting content. In other words, if your only reason for being there is to promote yourself, you will not be successful. You'll get very few if any votes and little to no traffic from them. In other words, think it out. Will others find what you are submitting interesting? If not, then submitting it to a social news site is not going to be effective.Take time to familiarize yourself with the site and its community, vote and comment of items you find interesting, and add friends as you find others that post interesting content. In other words, if your only reason for being there is to promote yourself, you will not be successful. You'll get very few if any votes and little to no traffic from them. In other words, think it out. Will others find what you are submitting interesting? If not, then submitting it to a social news site is not going to be effective.

    Don't be greedy with your votes and comments. Don't submit items and run (drive-by submission). Don't just vote on items submitted by your mutual friends. Don't share or send shouts for every item you submit. If you see or read something interesting, give it a vote up and comment if you have something to say. This can go a long way in establishing credibility on social sites. Rather, spend some time on the social sites you are submitting to. The more active you are, the more votes and comments you will receive. Look around and vote on new items or other items that might interest you. Only voting on friends stuff is a pattern that can easily be detected. Keep it to a minimum such as once a day or even less. Save the sharing for really good content or important items.If you see or read something interesting, give it a vote up and comment if you have something to say.     Do add friends to your profile. Do vote and comment more than you submit. Do explore the whole site. Do try to be open-minded of other's criticism when they comment on your items. Find those with similar interests and follow them, vote and comment on their submissions. You will find that your own submissions will get a lot more votes. no one really likes a hyperactive random submitter and/or drive by submitter. get out of your comfort zone and look at new things. Discover other areas besides the popular items as there is a lot to see and experience. It is better to say nothing and just go on your merry way than it is to start a fight. Put yourself in the commenter's "shoes." They may be having a bad day or they might just be an honest to goodness jerk.Find those with similar interests and follow them, vote and comment on their submissions.
