  3. 802.15 WPAN • 802.15 is still branded as a “Wireless Personal Area Network”, unreasonably limiting and archaic • It’s time for the “P” to go (or change) • 15 years ago, there was only 15.1 (Bluetooth) • “Personal” made sense • Then, 15.4 took off, and found itself in spaces better thought of as machine-to-machine • Then a bunch of other 15.x started, many of which are “personal” agnostic Jon Adams, Lilee Systems

  4. 802.15.4g PAR Excerpt • Principally outdoor communications • Provide a global standard that facilitates very large scale process control applications such as the utility smart-grid network • Supports large, geographically diverse networks with minimal infrastructure • Smart Metering Utility Networks can potentially contain millions of fixed endpoints. IEEE 802.15 Isn’t So Personal • It’s machine-to-machine (where the future lies) • Low energy (valuable for a number of amendments) • Low data rate (relative to other 802s) • Used for applications desiring highly robust communications • Great for peer-to-peer or any form of networking • It IS everyperson’s easy wireless packet radio standard, extremely flexible, for very large multiplicity of applications Jon Adams, Lilee Systems

How to Update the Name? • It is wireless (keep the W) • It is capable of any kind of network (keep the N) • Keep WPAN • Wireless Packet Area Network • Get rid of WPAN • Become IEEE 802.15 (with nothing following) • Come up with a new way of describing what it is that 802.15 is capable of doing Jon Adams, Lilee Systems

  10. Depending on the Interest • Establish a name-change committee • Come up with multiple, well-vetted proposals • Downselect or vote to pick the right one Jon Adams, Lilee Systems
