  1. Are You A Victim Of Domestic Violence? When we think of domestic violence, we often think of physical abuse, the kind we can see with our eyes. However, there are many types that often go unseen by the rest of the world. Sadly, in this day and age it is not uncommon to know someone who has been the victim of domestic violence. Domestic violence comes in many forms. The ones we hear about most frequently are: Physical Abuse –this includes any type of violent action taken upon another person and can also include the neglect of seeking medical attention to help an injured person or forcing someone to use drugs or alcohol. Sexual Abuse –when the abuser tries to coerce a victim into sexual behavior or actions without the victim’s consent. Emotional Abuse – this type of abuse involves the deflating of or invalidating the victim’s sense of self-worth and/or self-esteem. Some of the lesser-known types of domestic violence include: Economic Abuse– this occurs when an abuser attempts to make the victim financially dependent on the abuser. Psychological Abuse – in this scenario, the abuser uses intimidation and threats to keep the victims from living a normal life. Stalking & Cyber Stalking – actions like spying, watching, harassing, showing up at a victim’s location, and many other things are included in this type of abuse.

  2. Victims of abuse are not identifiable by their appearance, where they live, or their economic status. Victims of domestic violence can be anyone, including: Spouses Children Sexual, dating, or intimate partners Cohabitants Family members As we have read, domestic violence can take many forms. Depending on the level of abuse suffered by the victim, it may take them quite a while before they find the courage to seek help for themselves or their loved ones. Of the many steps a person can take when trying to get out of a domestic violence situation, obtaining a domestic violence lawyer is a very important place to start. Domestic violence lawyers are advocates for victims and represent their best interests at all times. These lawyers will help a victim through the process of leaving their abuser behind and starting over. These attorneys can advise their clients of all the options available to them, as well as provide resources and referrals to services they may need. They will guide the victim through the legal process, which can be long and draining on anyone. Domestic violence lawyers will discuss with their clients the possible outcomes of a trial or judgment. During the course of the judicial process, the lawyer will advise and direct the victim through all of the stages and proceedings needed for a trial or settlement. At any time, if the victim feels they are not being represented fairly, they may seek an alternate lawyer to represent them.
