  1. Year 5ResearchCCA-Treated Wood:Evaluating Toxicity During Disposal(Recently Funded)

  2. Objectives • Evaluate arsenic concentrations (total and individual species) in leachates from CCA-treated wood • Evaluate toxicity of alternative-chemical treated wood

  3. Methods, Phase I • Arsenic Speciation of Leachates from CCA-Treated Wood • Method Development, Cartridges for Samples Preservation • Lysimeter Installation & Leachate Analysis • TCLP and SPLP Tests & Leachate Analysis

  4. Cartridge System 0.45 mm filter DMA cation-exchange cartridge LC-SCX MMA, Elute with HAc anion-exchange cartridge LC-SAX As(V), Elute with HCL As(III)

  5. Sample Analysis • HPLC-HG-AFS: As(III), As(V), DMA, MMA • HPLC-ICP/MS: All Arsenic Species

  6. Methods, Phase II • Toxicity of the Alternatives • ACQ, CBA, CC, CDDC, CCA, untreated • 5 Toxicity Tests, Microtox, Metplate, Invertebrate Test, Algal Assay, Hormonally Active Agents

  7. Sample Processing • 8, 2”x4”x16 ft have been purchased • Analyzed to confirm treatment & retention • Samples then subjectedto leaching tests • For this portion of the projectsamples also subjected totoxicity tests

  8. Anticipated Benefits • Data Used to Determine the Impact of Current Disposal Pathways (Toxicity Focus) • Results Can Be Used With FDEP Risk Models • 1:1 Comparison of Alternative-Chemical Treated Wood Products  Toxicity of Alternatives Versus That of CCA

  9. Ash Problem Inventory Year 1 Ash Char & Trt Sorting Lab Year 2 Year 3,Suppl Minnesota Alt. Chem. Lit Review Sorting Field Year 3 Lit Review Alt Chem & As Spec Deck Study Alt. Chem. Leaching As Spec GW @ LF Year 4 Alt. Chem. Toxicity As Spec Simulated Year 5
