Capital • Honolulu • Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii • It is the largest city in Hawaii • Honolulu's name derives from the native words hono, meaning “a bay,” and lulu, meaning “sheltered.” • The Honolulu area was bombed by Japan in a surprise attack on the unprepared U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, which forced the U.S. to enter WWII. • The population of Honolulu is currently at 963,607.   4. Highways • Road System • The current state (then territorial) highway numbering system was established in 1955. Route numbers are organized so that the initial digit corresponds to the island: • Numbers beginning with 1 or 2: Hawaii • Numbers beginning with 3: Maui • Numbers beginning with 4: Molokai, Lanai • Numbers beginning with 5: Kauai • Numbers beginning with 6 to 9: Oahu • The designations of Interstate highways in Hawai‘i are abbreviated using the "H" prefix instead of the "I" prefix (e.g. Interstate H-1 is called simply "H-1" for short, NOT "I-H-1") Return to Homepage
