  1. Illegal Attack • Illegal Block • Over the Net • Center Line • Net Foul At The Net Ed Vesely 3/10/2012

  2. Illegal Attacks

  3. Illegal Back Row Attack • Player is a back row player • Player is in the front zone (or has jumped from the front zone) • Ball must be entirely above the net when attacked by the offending team • The attack must be completed We most often think of…

  4. What is a completed attack? • An attack is a ball directed towards the opponent’s court • It is completed when any of the following three happen: • The ball goes completely beyond the vertical plane of the net untouched • The ball is played by the opponents while in the vertical plane of the net • The ball is legally blocked by the opponents before it reaches the vertical plane of the net

  5. Communication • Signal • When to Whistle • To “Safe Sign” or Not To “Safe Sign”

  6. Challenges • Tracking players • Judging ball height • Judging foot position • Compressed timeframe: bang-bang plays

  7. Video Examples • Attacker from the attack line (BRA-1A) • Attacker from the attack line (BRA-2A) • Tight set at the net (BRA-3) • Safe Sign?

  8. Illegal Libero Attack • Player is the libero • Player is in ANYWHERE on the court • Ball must be entirely above the net when attacked by the libero • The attack must be completed Signal (Illegal Attack) is the same as Back Row Attack

  9. Illegal Attack from a Libero Assist • Libero: • Is in the front zone • Plays a ball using overhead finger action (ball height at time of set doesn’t matter) • Player receiving the set: • Is ANYWHERE on the court • Attacks the ball when it is completely above the height of the net • The attack is completed • Signal Illegal Attack, then indicate libero

  10. Illegal Attack of the Serve • Ball is served • Player is in ANYWHERE on the court • Ball must be entirely above the net when attacked by the offending team • The attack must be completed Signal (Illegal Attack) is the same as Back Row Attack

  11. Illegal Blocks

  12. Definition of a Blocker • Player is close to the net • Player is reaching higher than the net • Player deflects a ball coming from an opponent • Completed Block: When a blocker makes contact with a ball coming from the opposition, the block is considered complete.

  13. Illegal Back Row Block • Back row player completes a block • Block does not have to be intentional • A back row player who contacts a ball at the same time as an opponent has committed a back row block. • Faking or attempting a block is LEGAL. Only a completed block is illegal. We most often think of…

  14. Collective Block • Two or more blockers in close proximity form a collective block. • A collective block is completed if any of the players involved in a collective block contacts the ball. • It is illegal if a back row player participates in a completed collective block.

  15. Other Blocking Faults • Libero • All back row blocking faults apply • A libero is not allowed to attempt a block • No player may complete a block on a served ball.

  16. Over the Net

  17. Playing the ball • A player shall not contact a ball that is completely on the opponent’s side of the net unless the contact is a legal block. • A ball in the vertical plane of the net may be played by either team. This may be an attack or a block. • A blocker may not interfere with an opponent attempting to play a ball by touching that player before or during the attempt to play the ball.

  18. Legal Block • May block a ball completely on the opposition’s side if the opponent has had the opportunity to complete its attack: • Attacking team has had its three hits • Attacking team has had the opportunity to complete its attack or directs the ball towards its opponent’s side of the net • The ball is falling near the net and no team member could make a play on the ball

  19. Video Examples • Setter tries to save ball (BRA-4A) • Setter tries to save ball (BRB-2) • Blocking over? • Blocking over?

  20. Center Line

  21. Center Line • A hand or foot may contact the opponents’ court beyond the center line provided some part of that hand or foot remains on or over the centerline. • Any other body part contacting the opponents’ court is a foul. • Crossing the center line outside the width of the court is legal • Interfering with an opponents’ effort to play a ball is a foul, even if the player’s position is otherwise legal.

  22. Net Foul

  23. ` FOUL NO FOUL FOUL? FOUL

  24. Net Foul • It is a foul to touch: • Any part of the entire length of the net. • Any of the net cables. • The antennas. • Exceptions: • Loose hair • Ball forces the net into the player • Interfering with an opponents’ effort to play a ball is a foul. For example, intentionally move hands to deflect a ball heading into the body of the net • Dangerous contact with standards or first referee platform

  25. Putting It All Together

  26. Considerations with Back Row Player with the Ball Near the Net • Is the ball completely above the net ? • Is the player above the net? • Is the ball in the vertical plane of the net? • Was the ball directed towards the opponents’ court? • Was it possible for the attacking team to make another play? • Who touched the ball first? • Now, what if the first hit was from the libero hand-setting a dig from the front zone? What changes?

  27. You Make the Call • Libero in front of the attack line sets a ball that is partially below the height of the net to a teammate using overhead finger action. When the ball is completely above the height of the net, the teammate swings and misses. The ball is blocked in the plane of the net by the opposition. PLAY ON

  28. You Make the Call • Libero in front of the attack line picks up a dump from the opposition using overhead finger action. When the ball is completely above the height of the net, the setter, seeing a opening, dumps the ball to the opponent’s court. ILLEGAL ATTACK – INDICATE LIBERO

  29. You Make the Call • Libero jump sets a ball using overhead finger action after leaving the ground with her foot on the attack line. When the ball is completely above the height of the net, a back row player jumps 15’ from the center line, and send the ball to the opponent’s court. ILLEGAL ATTACK – INDICATE LIBERO

  30. You Make the Call • Libero jump sets a ball using overhead finger action after leaving the ground with her foot on the attack line. His teammate lets the ball drop partially below the height of the net before down-balling it over the net. PLAY ON

  31. You Make the Call • Libero in front of the attack line picks up a dump from the opposition using overhead finger action. When the ball is completely above the height of the net, the setter sets the ball towards a teammate. When the ball enters the plane of the net, it is blocked by the opponent. ILLEGAL ATTACK – INDICATE LIBERO

  32. You Make the Call • Libero is behind the attack line and jumps to set a ball. The set is made using overhead finger action while over the attack zone. His teammate contacts the ball while it is completely above the height of the net and drills it to the opponents’ court. PLAY ON

  33. You Make the Call • Libero is standing on the attack line with his right foot with his left foot outside of the front zone. He raises his right foot off of the floor, and then jumps off of his left foot to set a ball. The set is made using overhead finger action. His teammate contacts the ball while it is completely above the height of the net and hits it into the opponents’ block. PLAY ON

  34. You Make the Call • The back row setter goes up to set a ball that is in the plane of the net and contacts the ball at the same time as an opposition blocker. The ball goes to the setter’s teammate who pounds the ball, which is completely higher than the net, to the floor. ILLEGAL BACK ROW BLOCK
