  1. 7 Important Winter Weather Terms FREEZING RAIN This rain freezes upon hitting the ground and other surfaces. It creates an icy shell on roads, walkways, trees and power lines, causing extremely dangerous dangerous travel conditions. SLEET A rain that turns to small pellets of ice, causing slippery driving and walking conditions, and often, damage to vehicles and property.

  2. 7 Important Winter Weather Terms WINDCHILL Wind felt blowing against the skin on a cold day causes your body to experience a colder temperature than the actual outdoor air temperature. The perceived temperature difference varies dependent upon the velocity of the wind. Knowing the windchill is important to help you dress appropriately and limit exposure to avoid frostbite. WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY When a Winter Weather Advisory is called, winter weather conditions are expected to escalate which may cause significant inconveniences and delays, but should not be life threatening. A Winter Weather Advisory is less dangerous than a A Winter Storm Watch. WINTER STORM WATCH/WARNING A Winter Storm Watch means that the development of a winter storm in your area is possible, but the location and timing are uncertain. Issued 12 to 36 hours prior to potential development. Winter Storm weather includes severe conditions such as heavy snow or ice. Continue tuning in to a local weather channel for changing information, and be prepared with emergency supplies in case of a power outage. When a Winter Storm Warning is announced, severe weather is expected to move into your area soon.

  3. 7 Important Winter Weather Terms BLIZZARD WARNING A Blizzard Warning is announced when sustained winds or gusts of 35 miles per hour or more and substantial amounts of falling or blowing snow, causing reduced visibility of less than 1/4 mile, are expected to persist for three hours or longer. FROST/FREEZE WARNING These announcements are especially prominent at the beginning of the cold weather season to alert you when below freezing temperatures are expected.
