  2. Units we will study this year: • Unit 1: Understanding Societies Past and Present • Unit 2: Early Societies of Mesopotamia • Unit 3: Ancient Societies of Greece and Rome • Unit 4: Transition to the Modern World • Unit 5: Shaping the Modern World

  3. What is the oldest place you have been to? • What is the oldest thing you have seen? • What is the oldest building in Manitoba? • Prince of Wales Fort near Churchill 1731-41 • Saint Boniface Museum 1846-1851

  4. What is history? • “History” means “wisdom” • It is a study of the past • Historians are scholars who write about history

  5. Why study history? • The past influences us in many ways. • Some of the things we take for granted come from the past • Place names: come from various cultures-Winnipeg and Manitoba are Aboriginal names, Gimli (Icelandic) and St. Pierre-Jolys (French) • Personal names-names may reflect a family tradition or have some personal meaning • Language-the alphabet and the way we pronounce words come from various other languages such as Greek (eg. school), Latin (student), Arabic (cheque), and French • Values and beliefs: have been shaped by history • Institutions: Canada’s system of parliamentary monarchy started when Canada was a British Colony • The past shapes how we think about the present and the future • Helps us to understand change • Helps us to understand different cultures

  6. Archeologists VS. Historians • Archeologists- people who study, describe, and interpret artifacts (anything made by humans) • Historians-study and investigate the past

  7. Historical Evidence • Archeology • Artifacts • Literature • Art • Music • Biographies • Journals • Photographs • Oral histories How do all of these pieces of evidence help us understand the past?

  8. Who are you? • Your beliefs and values, your attitudes, your ideas, and your actions • Identity: an individuals perception of who they are. A person can have more than one identity • Eg. athlete, vegetarian, student, etc.

  11. How is your Worldview formed? • Your worldview is formed by the time, place, and culture that you live in

  12. Which picture do you prefer? Which one is the easiest to understand?Which picture is something that you could relate to? Why?

  13. Questions • Does Canada have a common view of how we as Canadians should act towards the rest of the world? • What does the relationship between the Canadian government and its citizens tell us about the Canadian worldview?

Factors Affecting Worldview • Geography-where a group of people live, climate, plants, animals, bodies of water, natural resources • Ideas and knowledge-scientific, technological, artistic, spiritual, intellectual • Contact with other groups- interactions with other societies • Time • Culture • Education • Media • The arts

  17. Elements of Society Affected by Worldview • Social Systems-organizationand relationships among people • Governance • Culture- the way of life of a group of people • Resources-means available to a society to achieve a goal

  18. Society Vs. Civilization • Society • a group of people that have a number of things in common • In a society, a group of people share a common/shared identity • When societies develop and become more complex they become civilizations • Civilizations • Consist of the same components of a society on a more complex level • Has to have a central government to organize and maintain the societies internal structure (eg. a sewage and drainage system)
