  2. Egypt Predynastic Period (5200 BC to 2700 BC): First settlers of the Nile Valley hunt and fish, later switch to farming.Many kings rule the several districts spread throughout Egypt. A single leader conquers and unifies all of Egypt under one rule.

  4. Egypt At first, there was only Nun. Nun was the dark waters of chaos.

  5. Egypt One day, a hill rose up out of the waters. This hill was called Ben-Ben.

  6. Egypt On this hill stood Atum, the first god.

  7. Egypt Atum coughed and spat out Shu, the god of the air, and Tefnut, the goddess of moisture.

  8. Egypt Shu and Tefnut had two children. First, there was Geb, the god of the earth. Then, there was Nut, the goddess of the sky.

  13. Egypt Shu lifted Nut up so that she became a canopy over Geb.

Egypt • In ancient myths, Geb (the earth) and his wife Nut (the sky) were snuggled up to each other so closely that there was no space between them for the sun to travel. • So Re, the god of the sun, ordered their father Shu (god of the air) to come between them, separating the pair with a violent storm. • Shu held Nut up away from the ground to create air space in which the sun could travel. • Darkness came daily, whenever Shu let her down, but every morning she was lifted off of Geb all over again.

  16. Egypt Nut and Geb had four children named Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys.

  17. Egypt Osiris was the king of the earth and Isis was the queen. Osiris was a good king, and he ruled over the earth for many years.

  20. Egypt However, everything was not well. Seth was jealous of Osiris because he wanted to be the ruler of the earth. He grew angrier and angrier until one day he killed Osiris.

  21. Egypt Osiris went down into the underworld and Seth remained on earth and became king.

  22. Egypt Osiris and Isis had one son called Horus. Horus battled against Seth and regained the throne. After that, Horus was the king of the earth and Osiris was the king of the underworld.
