  1. Stability of motorbikes Robbie Jackson

  2. Centre of mass • The centre of mass is the unique point in an object or system which can be used to describe the system's response to external forces and torques. To find the centre of mass of an object, you hang the shape with a weighted piece of string (like in the picture), by hanging the string at three different points on the shape, and drawing lines along the rope, on the shape. The point where these three lines join is the centre of mass.

  3. Centre of mass • The further forward (closer to front wheel) the centre of mass of the combined bike and rider, the less the front wheel has to move in order to maintain balance.

  4. Stability • If an object is ‘stable,’ this means it can remain unchanged. In terms of a motorcycle, stability is when it stays upright and doesn’t fall over.

  5. What affects stability? • The base area of the object (smaller base=more unstable) The weight of the base of the object (weigh less=more unstable) Unstable Stable

  6. What affects Stability of a motorbike? • So it is best for a motorcycle to have a larger base area and for it to be quite heavy, as these qualities will make the vehicle more stable, and when turning corners, motorcyclists are safer to be going at a reasonably high speed, as if it is going too slow it will wobble and possibly fall over, but if it is going too fast it will be harder to turn.

  7. What is the gyroscopic effect? • The gyroscopic effect in a motorcycle is very important to the stability of the vehicle. The gyroscopic effect is how the speed of a vehicle increases the stability.
