  2. Why Temperance? • People blamed crime, poverty, and even mental illness on drunkenness • The use and abuse of Alcohol was common during the early 1800’s. • Many reformers called for • Temperance – moderation in drinking habits

  3. How? • Some reformers wanted drinking to be banned all together • They pushed for laws that banned the sale of alcohol. Maine was the first state to pass this law. Other states followed suite. • However most states lifted their bans after a little time had passed.
