  1. PAG Tech Digital Youth Work Conference St. Peters, Sunderland University 14th July 2011

  2. Concept • The idea behind this project was to work with a small group of mixed ability young people to make a comic book using various internet media to put across young peoples experiences of disability discrimination and what it means to them

  3. The Group • The group I have been working with consists of 4 young people. • 2 of the young people have various learning and physical disabilites • 1 of the young people suffers from severe social anxiety disorder and helps care for his older brother who has severe autism • The final member of the group is a carer for her disabled mother

  4. Technology used • For this project we have been using www.pikistrips.com and www.pixton.com to create the comic pages • for characters for the comics some young people used http://www.reasonablyclever.com/mini-mizers/mini-mizer-2-0/ to create Lego characters to use in the comics • Other young people in the group used a combination of MS Paint and Photoshop 7 to create their comics • We have also used www.goanimate to create animated comics which contain both classic speech bubbles and voice acted animations

  8. Now lets hear from the young people! • First lets hear from Lesley Anne • Lesley has Learning difficulties and has been picked on in the past • Lesley is an active volunteer and gives a lot of her time to helping others and thinks this is a great way to help people understand disabilities and discrimination

  9. Now lets hear from the young people! Cont. • Now lets hear from ME! On behalf of Marc • Marc suffers from severe social anxiety disorder • Finds speaking in front of large groups difficult and has been picked on/discriminated against for his mental health problems.

  10. Now lets hear from the young people! Cont. • Next lets hear from ME AGAIN! On behalf of Laura • Laura’s mum is disabled and Laura gets a lot of problems from people due to this • Laura was having problems at school due to her being a carer • Laura is heavily bullied at School

  11. Now lets hear from the young people! Cont. • And finally lets hear from Toni! • Toni has both learning difficulties and disabilities and has been discriminated against many times in the past • Toni doesn’t let her disabilities get in the way of her doing what she wants and she is very vocal when someone is discriminating against someone for their disabilities

  12. Where to next? • Some of the young people in the group have expressed an interest in expanding the project to more young people and helping to facilitate the sessions • Young people have also expressed an interest in using programs such as Microsoft Kodu to create computer games • The group are looking in to other uses of technology to enhance learning and explore issues around discrimination.
