  2. Setting the stage: Just like in Africa, European nations competed to carve up Southeast Asia mostly the Pacific Rim countries that border the Pacific Ocean.

  3. I. European Powers Invade the Pacific RimA. Dutch Expand Control • 1. The lands of Southeast Asia were perfect for plantation agriculture: sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconuts, bananas, and pineapples

  12. II. Siam Remains IndependentA. Siam Claims Neutrality • 1. King Mongkut- prevented imperialism in Siam (present day Thailand) by building their infrastructure, education system, legal system, & ended slavery as a result they were able to avoid exploitation from European powers.

  14. A. The Philippines Change Hands • Emilio Aguinaldo lead the nationalist vs the U.S. but would later be defeated in 1902 • U.S had Filipinos produce cash crops for infrastructure (railroads, schools, roads, etc)
