  1. Chapter 6 Notes Lord of the Flies

  2. Recap… • The author introduces an external force which causes • further deterioration of the already fragile island society. • A dead parachutist falls from an air battle and drifts to the mountain near the signal fire. • Sam & Eric awake and catch a glimpse of this parachutist, snagged in the trees. • The natural rhythm of the blowing trees causes the body to lift and fall as if it were still alive. • It is in this movement, combined with the awakening fear of the BEAST, that prompts the twins to jump to the conclusion that they’ve seen the BEAST.

  3. Things to Notice… • This sighting is the first “confirmation” of the BEAST from someone other than a littlun. • The reader knows the beast is harmless. This is • DRAMATIC IRONY: the audience knows the true reality, while the speaker (Sam and Eric) responds to his or her own perceptions of reality. • THEME: The breakdown of socialized behavior. This theme is given new dimension by the introduction of TERROR. The boys must now operate on basic survival instincts, thus discarding the buffers of civilization.

  4. Things to Notice… • SYMBOL: Piggy. As a symbol of controlled society, Piggy cannot be involved with the hunt for the BEAST. • FORESHADOWING: Castle Rock. Jack is instantly attracted to the craggy spot that will later become his “fort”. Ralph calls it “a rotten place.” • POINT OF VIEW. Simon. The focus shifts briefly to Simon as he walks in the woods, the place he feels most at home.

  5. Nightmares… • Describe the BEAST of your worst nightmares. Include details about the BEAST’s hunting and eating habits, as well as physical descriptions and descriptions of how the BEAST deals with victims, and any other information about the BEAST.
