  2. History • The KMT fled to Taiwan after the Communists under Mao Tse Tung took control in 1949. • Supported by the US with the Korean War and then a focus for the Cold War. • ROC = Taiwan / PRC = China

  3. Which China • ROC intially held seat on the security council. • Austrecognised ROC as China until 1972. • Shanghai Communique – Nixon • 1978 Normalisation Agreement • 1979 TRA – guarantees Taiwans security • 25 countries still recogniseTaiwans sovereignty.

  4. Beijing’s Position • Taiwan is part of China • One country two systems • Force if necessary • 1995 - Zemin’s 8 Point Plan

  5. Taiwan’s Position • There are a range of views. • KMT / DPP / PFP/ TSU • Ultimately the question is whether to reunify and on what terms. • DPP – wants one China / One Taiwan
