  1. Summit Hill ElementaryArt EDventures “Wheat Stacks” 1st Grade Math-Measurement of Time Claude Monet Brought to you by S.H.E. PTA PLEASE NOTE: This presentation is to be used for educational purposes only. Do not reproduce.

  2. Who Was Monet? • Claude Monet was born a long time ago in Paris, France. When he was your age (5) his family left the big city to live by the sea. • Monet’s father worked in a grocery store that sold supplies to the sailors. Monet met all kinds of amusing people and was free to frolic in the fresh air and sparkling sea. • (Hit enter)

  3. Funny Faces • Claude became very good at drawing and spent much of his time sketching silly pictures of his friends and teachers. • When he was a teenager, people even paid him to make funny pictures of them. • He must of had a very good sense of humor.

  4. Impressionism… Monet’s Way • When Monet got older he loved to paint outside. • He never made practice drawings- he just painted right on the canvas. • He often worked on several canvases at once-- catching his subject at different times of the day and in different light. (Hit enter and wait to see three of his paintings.)

  5. Wheat Stacks One day Monet noticed the local farmers storing their wheat in large rounded stacks. He set up his easel and watched them from sunrise to sunset. For two years he returned to the wheat fields during each season (spring, summer, winter and fall) to paint them. Amazingly, he completed 25 wheat stack paintings in all. What time is it? Is this after a sunrise or beforea sunset?

  6. Series & Seasons Winter Spring Match the season to the painting! Fall Summer (Hit enter to reveal each season.)

  7. Monet On Display Monet intended all his wheat stacks be shown in an ensemble or group. Today, however, Art Museums all over the world usually own only one or two. It is very special when they can be seen together!

  8. More Seasonal Studies… Monet’s Jardins de Bordighera Spring- March, April, May, Summer- June, July, Aug, Fall- June, July, Aug, Hit “enter” for Spring months. Hit “enter” again for Summer months. Hit “enter” a third time for fall months.

  9. Water Garden After his wheat stacks, Monet painted many other things in a series like Poplar trees, gardens and Cathedrals but his water lilies were his very favorite. He painted his pond during different times of the day, days of the week, months of the year, seasons and weather until he died. (Hit enter) (Hit “enter” only once then 5 images will begin to auto play.)

  10. Art EDventures Sample 4 x 4 Tile 6 x 6 Tile 6 x 8 Tile Wheat Stacks The Monet Way Now it’s time to paint like Monet! The class will divide into four groups-spring, summer, winter and fall. Each group will paint a wheat stack tile to reflect their assigned season and calendar months. Then the class can display their series.

  11. Project Art EDventures • Divide the class into four groups/ four seasons: • Spring-March/April/May • Summer-June/July/Aug • Fall-Sept/Oct/Nov • Winter-Dec/Jan/Feb If you have a 5th table just pick a season to repeat. Tile Painting: • Pass a tile out to each child • Place an assortment of tile paint on each table. • Hand out brushes and water containers. (Have paper towels on hand to help clean the brushes in between colors.) Turn tiles over so the rough side is facing up. Sign your name and draw the paw so others will know this is an Art EDventures project. Turn the tile back over and begin to paint a wheat stack like Monet with the colors of the seasons/months assigned to your table. (There really is no wrong color…) Simplify the shapes for the kids by drawing a wheat stack on the white board. It’s basically a square with a triangle on top. You can try to have them add in a field around the wheat stacks and a sky. A volunteer from each class will need to take them home and bake them as directed. (Approx. 30 minutes at 300 degrees and they MUST cool down slowly. The actual baking time and temp depends on the brand of paint used.)

  12. Project Art EDventures If you have time, you can play a game of Monet Says if they need a break before you start the project. It is played just like “Simon Says.” (Have fun!) Monet says to…. • Put on the art apron that is behind you. • Put your tile in front of you. • Sign your name on the rough side of the tile and “Draw the Paw” next to your name. • Look under the table for ceramic paint and brushes. • Hold your paint brush above your head. • Pass your brush to the person sitting to the right of you. • Stand up. • Sit down. • Pass your brush to the person to the leftof you. Now you just covered many of the GPS standards and are ready to begin!

  13. Supply List • Ceramic Tiles- (found at Home Depot/Lowes in several sizes. We chose 4 x6 because the kids can paint a 4x4 tile very quickly.) • Paint Brushes • Ceramic Paint-five different colors per table • Water Bowls to clean brushes • Paper towels • Optional –cork backing, felt feet or round plastic pieces for the bottom but then it can’t be washed. Pebeo Porcelaine 150 — These water-based paints can be applied to any heat-stable surface — porcelain, crockery, terra-cotta, metals, ceramics, glass, etc. Fire them in a home oven at 300°F for 30 minutes for a finish that's as permanent as baked enamel and can be placed in the dishwasher.

  14. G.P.S. Ties • M1G3 Students will arrange and describe objects in space by proximity, position, and direction (near, far, below, above, up, down, behind, in front of, next to, and left or right of). • M1M2 Students will develop an understanding of the measurement of time.a. Tell time to the nearest hour and half hour and understand the movement of the minute hand and how it relates to the hour hand.b. Begin to understand the relationship of calendar time by knowing the number of days in a week and months in a year.c. Compare and/or order the sequence or duration of events (e.g., shorter/longer and before/after).
