  1. Update on ITAR • Elise Gerich • Vice President, IANA Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers

  2. Timeline • 2008: Community (led by RIPE) asks for ICANN to run a trust anchor repository for TLD operators; ICANN Board votes for ICANN to implement a “Registry of DNSSEC trust anchors for TLDs” • January 2009: ITAR is launched • July 2010: Root Zone is signed • November 2010: EOL notice for ITAR; Remove existing trust anchors • January 2011: Turn off ITAR

  3. TLD Adoption • http://stats.research.icann.org/dns/tld_report/

  4. Thoughts • ITAR project went very well. Relatively clear requirements from the community helped. • Automation meant that it required little staff effort to maintain after deployment • The way TLDs interacted with the system helped inform the discussion on managing DS records in the root zone • Once root was signed, TLDs quickly switched. TLDs in the root surpasses ITAR within around a month. • Advance notice that ITAR would be turned off helped spur last TLDs that hadn’t transitioned to the root to do so.

  5. Thanks!
