  1. Genetics

  2. Friday, 2/8/13

  3. Warm-up answers

  4. Friday, 2/8/13—Test Day • Test today • When you are done, please find the definitions for the evolution vocabulary words.

  5. Thursday, 2/7/13 • E.Q. What do I know, well, in genetics? Use H---long hair, h—short hair

  6. Warm-up answers There are only two choices for dad—HH OR Hh Genotypes of offspring—2 Hh(long-haired) and 2 hh(short haired) So, Pappa Yeti’s genotype--Hh

  7. Genetics with a smile You are your partner must read the directions • You are working with a partner, at your table • One of you is flipping for the MALE traits • The other partner is flipping for the FEMALE traits • Remember to write a genotype (2 alleles) and the genotype for each smiley face trait • To know which traits the genotypes represent, look at the smiley face traits key (green sheet) • Draw & color the face.

  8. Answer these questions on the back of your sheet • 11) Why did you only need to flip the male parent coin to determine the sex of your smiley face? • (12) How would the smiley faces change if one of the parents were homozygous dominant for all the traits • while the other was heterozygous? • (13) How would the smiley faces change if one of the parents were recessive for all the traits while the other was • heterozygous?

  9. Wednesday, 2/6/13

  10. Warm-up answer We expect that over their lifetime that 25% of their children would have long hair .25 of 40 =.25 x 40=10 children

  11. Activities • Genetics Study Guide— • Continue to work on your study guide • When are done, go to assignment details below. • CRCT Preparation (write this assignment in your notebook) • Go to pages 138-139 in your textbook • Answer the questions in complete sentences (including the multiple choice questions

  12. Tuesday, 2/5/13

  13. Warm-up answer 50% of the children have curly hair, so we expect 5 out of the 10 children to have curly hair.

  14. Monday, 2/4/13 • What do I know, well, in genetics?

  15. Warm-up answers 100% of offspring would be one-eyed cyclops (Tt) F2 generation would be regular one-eyed cyclops—75% (TT, Tt, Tt)

  16. It’s time to prepare for the exam on Friday, 2/8/13 • Genetics Study Guide—use a separate sheet of paper, if necessary. • As always, the completed study guide is due on Friday, before the exam. • Please go to chapter 5 to find your answers. • You may not use the glossary to find the definitions….remember, to use your vocabulary graphic organizer and all of your notes.

  17. Friday, 2/1/13Tomorrow is Groundhog’s Day—Let’s hope for an early spring Use C for curly, use c, for straight

  18. Warm-up answers 100% of the children will have curly hair. Therefore the 9th child has a 100% probability of having Curly hair.

  19. Genetic Carousel • Write title in your notebook • You will be in groups of six. • Answer the punnet square problems together

  20. Thursday, 1/31/13—yes, it’s real

  21. WARM-UP ANSWERS Percentage of F2 generation with hooves—75% Genotypes—HH, Hh, Hh, hh

  22. Mitosis & Meiosis Activity • Mitosis Diagrams • See page 127 • Draw the cells • Then, beneath each bubble, write in 5 words or less, what is happening at each stage. • Meiosis Diagrams • See page 128-129 • Draw the cells • Then, beneath each bubble, write in 5 words or less, what is happening at each stage.

  23. Wednesday, 1/30/13 • How are mitosis and meiosis compared?

  24. Warm-up answer Future wife genotype-AA-

  25. Mitosis & Meiosis Chart • Glue the orange mitosis and meiosis chart into your notebook. • Follow the textbook pages and record the missing information from the chart. • Add pages 98-99 to the mitosis • Add pages 126-130 to meiosis • We will review the answers together.

  26. Activity • Complete pages 75-77 in your workbook • If you have completed them, read chapter 5 on meiosis • Answer questions 1-6, on page 133 in complete sentences, in your notebook.

  27. Tuesday, 1/28/13 • How are traits combined through selective breeding?

  28. Warm-up answers SS, Ss,--The dominant trait is present, so these are the possible genotypes for DiMarco, who does not have sickle cell disease. The child with the genotype, ss , has the disease.

  29. What are selective breeding and cloning?Rules for taking notes • You will be taking a few notes today on selective breeding • Take out your notebook • you need to “summarize” in your own words. • Do not write down each and every word…I will be moving fast through the power point.

  30. Real Hybrids/Crossbreeding You tube video

  31. Reading Activities • Take out workbook • Complete pages 70-71 • If you are done, get a textbook, and go to the index and find the pages for selective breeding. • Read these pages regarding selective breeding.

  32. Monday, 1/28/13 • E.Q.—How did I get my genetic traits

  33. HUSBAND’S genotype---RR

  34. Activities • Period 2, 3, & 4—Alien Genetics--Part c—Sexual Reproduction of the Alien • Your goal is to now create your offspring from the union Parent 1 and Parent 2 • Flip the penny, if HEADS, Choose parent 1 gene • Flip the penny, if TAILS, Choose parent 2 gene • Do not continue to part D—SKIP this section • If you finish, Go on Summary worksheet, and answer the questions.

  35. Activities continued • Create a Pet Activity (Period 1) • Glue offspring to construction paper • Create a pedigree chart • Males on the left, females • on the right; s • When you are done, • Start working on pages 69-74,

  36. Friday, 1/25/12 • E.Q.—How did I get my genetic traits

  37. Answers for warm-up • Parent genotypes for cystic fibrosis— • A a

  38. Images of Genetic traits • Cleft chin

  39. Activities • Create a Pet Activity (Period 1) • Place the finishing touches on your male or female pet • You will find a partner , preferable at your table • Once you find your partner, you will determine the genotypes and phenotypes of your 2 offspring • When you flip, HEADS--FEMALE genotype • TAILS----MALE genotype • Design the yellow or blue offspring • Glue offspring to construction paper

  40. Activities • Genetic alien directions • For the Asexual alien, Part B • Flip the penny • HEADS—DOMINANT TRAIT • TAILS---RECESSIVE TRAIT • For each genotype, you must flip twice (2x)

  41. Thursday, 1/24/13Punnett Quiz today • E.Q.—How did I get my genetic traits

  42. HW Punnett Square Problems # 1& 2 Genotypes— 50% Tt, 50% tt Phenotypes—50% tall, 50% short Genotypes—25% RR, 50% Rr, 25% rr Phenotypes 75% Round, 25% wrinkled

  43. Quiz instructions • For Question # 1– Use (P ) for pointed ears & (p) for folded ears • For Question #2 –see question for the allele letter to be used

  44. Activities for today • Punnett Square Quiz (15 min.) • Please take out a pencil or pen for your quiz • Create a Pet (Per. 1) Activity or • FLIP a penny to determine if you have a male or female • (HEADS—MALE, TAILS—FEMALE) • Yellow and blue construction paper are in the center of the table. • Please read the directions • Alien Genetics Activity (Per. 2, 3, & 4)
