Program Structure - Courses • 36 credits to graduate • Courses typically 3.0 or 6.0 credits • Specializations – certain courses are required; certain number of credits within specialization may be required; you may need to do courses outside to get the required credits • General – no required courses but there are some prerequisites • Refer to calendars

Program Structure - Courses • Courses are scheduled as weekly or intensives • Distance students – note that some courses must be attended in person • Preparation required! • intensives – reading materials provided 3-4 weeks in advance • weekly – week before – hand-outs/course website • proviso • Attendance required! • if absence unavoidable: up to 4 hours of a 3.0 credit course/ 8 hrs of 6.0 credit • Over that – additional assignment

Research Requirement • 2 options • Major Research Paper (70 pages) – worth 6 credits • one term is devoted to writing the paper (usually in 2nd year) • decide as soon as possible • need an approved supervisor • must take Advanced Legal Research workshop before the MRP term • must do this if want to continue in grad studies beyond the LLM • 30 page paper • must be done as the method of evaluation for one of your courses • can be any course • let instructor know asap

Financial Matters • Program Fee billed in 6 equal installments (invoice is on Passport York) • If you finish early, still must pay the full Program Fee • If take more than 6 terms, must pay the Faculty of Graduate Studies “domestic fee” per term to continue enrollment (up to 12 terms maximum) • Very limited needs-based financial assistance available

  9. When and Why You Need to Contact Your GPA • To register for each term before: Registration Deadlines: Winter term – January 15th Summer term – May 15th Fall term – September 15th Register before the deadline to avoid the $200 Late Fee

Passport York • YOU must activate your account (GPAs cannot do this) • Allows you to access: • Financial statements and transactions (invoices NOT mailed) • Academic record and grades • T2202 Tax Forms (NOT mailed) • Ensure you keep your personal info up-to-date (GPA cannot do this) • https://passportyork.yorku.ca/ppylogin/ppylogin

  12. YU Cards • Get your YU card from GPA once registered • This is your student card – also your library card • Can use on campus for gym, etc. • Need it to check out library materials but also need it to access on-line library materials (plus your Passport York account)
