  1. Project Management Knowledge Sharing March 2002

  2. Background • GRC’s participation in the NASA Academy of Program and Project Leadership (APPL) courses and related activities has significant room for improvement • APPL produces a bi-monthly magazine Academy Sharing Knowledge (ASK), “The NASA source for project management”, presently issuing its seventh volume, contains articles and best practices from across NASA - but none from GRC • Project Managers at other NASA Centers, namely MSFC & ARC, are represented to a very large degree

  3. Introduction • 0170 together with ODTO and close cooperation and collaboration from Code FT are proposing to develop a community of emerging program and project leaders • The basis is to assemble a group/network of the more emerging program and project managers to interact on a regular basis and begin a process of knowledge sharing • The hope is that this initiative will be viewed as value-added and a vehicle for improvement of skills and an opportunity for GRC recognition as an innovator of program and project leadership development • This activity will feature a kickoff event on May 2, 2002 called Transfer Wisdom into Action

  4. Knowledge Sharing a.k.a. Transfer Wisdom Into Action • The following principles have been developed by Dr. Alex Laufer, the leader/creator of the NASA Knowledge Sharing Initiative: • Generating and sharing new knowledge is crucial for the success of the organization • One must look for new knowledge within the organization and close to the action • Generating sharing and discussing stories is an excellent way of converting tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge and an effective method for quickly assimilating new knowledge Basis for GRC Initiative

  5. Knowledge Sharing Objectives • Primary Objectives • Participants will be exposed to new ideas and practices that they can apply and/or implement right away. • Participants will become aware of the expanded meaning of knowledge (explicit and tacit), and intelligence (mental, emotional, and spiritual). • Participants will be convinced that to be effective project leaders they must become researchers-in-action (that is, they must continuously reflect on and analyze their experience). • Participants will understand the unique power of stories in generating, sharing, and acquiring project knowledge from ASK magazine. • Secondary Objectives • Participants will have an opportunity to network with peers. • Participants will have an opportunity to share their unique knowledge with the group and with the rest of NASA. • APPL will collect feedback regarding the effectiveness of its knowledge-sharing initiative.  • APPL will collect information regarding the establishment of a network of customers and suppliers of knowledge.

  6. Transfer Wisdom Into Action • Target Audience: • Emerging project leaders from any discipline • Due to the highly interactive nature of this workshop attendance at the May 2 (full day) session will be limited • This is not a one-time event • Follow-on sessions (GRC) will be every 6-8 weeks for 1-2 hours

  7. Transfer Wisdom Into Action • Action: • Please nominate people who should be and want to be part of this initiative • Please send nominations to Kathy Clark (Kathy.M.Clark@grc.nasa.gov) by March 22, 2002
