  1. Middle School to High School Advisement for College and Career Readiness Presented by: Teri Edison, MA Counseling Guidance Counselor, BMHS and BES District: Levy County 4th Annual NEFEC Counselor Consortium January 14, 2014

  2. Introduction • We will discuss key elements of student advisement in academic achievement, new graduation requirements, middle school promotion, school grades, and state ECOs affecting middle school students.

  3. Introduction continued • Also, will have the opportunity to participate in collaborative activities for resource gathering on topics covering college readiness curriculum, motivation through career exploration, and affective scheduling for academic achievement.

  5. College Readiness begins with Middle School Curriculum • In our middle schools we use College Board Curriculum called Spring Board in our Language Arts classes which builds the students skills to prepare the students for long term learning to take rigorous high school AP courses.

  6. College Readiness begins with Curriculum • In math we are offering Algebra I on Honors to raise the bar with rigorous curriculum to high level thinking and head towards higher math and Dual Enrollment in the upper level grades in high school. • In science we are using IQuest Curriculum which in cooperates use of technology.

  7. Advisement starts with Career Exploration early in the middle school classroom Exploring begins in the classroom at BMHS in our Career and Technology Education, career exploration wheel classes. Teachers and School Counselors are Highly Qualified Instructors in Career Education and embed career lessons linking real world skills into their classroom curriculum. CTE, Social Studies, AVID Teachers, and School Counselors, have been trained to use FL CHOICES with the students.

  8. Classroom Career Exploration with the School Counselor • Students use interactive web based career exploration for career assessment. Our Grades 6-8 students use: • Students explore careers • Play career games • Watch real life career videos that are age appropriate.

  9. Career Inventories for the 6th and 7th grades link to Advisement •  Students make the connection of real world learning by exploring careers early in education. They learn to set goals for their own futures. They explore using today's technology answering the age old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Hmmm…

  10. Career Exploration and Inventories • 6th Grades uses FREE inventories on found Kids.gov. Link: http://kids.usa.gov/teens-home/jobs/index.shtml • 7th Grade uses FREE inventories for students who participated Readi Step assessment, • My Road, offered by College Board.   11. Group Activity: Think, Write, Pair Share about Career Inventories 1. Think: Introduce yourself: Name, Current position Type of School( Middle School, Middle High,K-12) • Write: List the career inventories you use at which grade level and positive student outcomes you have used in advisement. • Pair with collogues at your table/area. Decide who will share for the group. • Shareout the information and place on poster. (Information will be gathered for email list of collaborated career resources)

Motivation drives Student Goal setting and achievement Inventories gives clarification for the students goals who are looking for the answer of their Essential Question: 6th Grade E.Q.: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” 7th Grade E.Q.: “What skills will you need to do prepare you for a career or to be college ready?” 8th Grade E.Q.: “Evaluate your current skills, how will you plan to prepare yourself for future college or career?”

Planning for the Future • After three years of Career Inventories and predictor assessments, such as Levy Interim Assessment(LIA), FAIR, and Readi Step, School Counselors need to look at high school credit classes for students in the eight grade is an essential element in advisement to help prepare the student for college and careers.

Test Scores Uses in Advisement Setting up the students schedule • FCAT • scores used for Acceleration, placement in Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, and English 1 Honors • Readi Step • Scores used for placement into high school level elective courses in the 8th grade. • Scores used for recommendations into the AVID Program

  15. Advisement for Academic Achievement, What Research Indicates • GPA is a better predictor to college success than a single cut off score. This needs to be taken into consideration for students placement into honor and advanced classes • Looking at student’s and motivation can be a support for improving achievement. • Students’ Social and Emotional status/ maturity for acceleration and Teacher recommendation are important in student advisement. • Relationship building improves achievement. Programs your school has in place such as AVID, mentoring groups, Small group adviser/advisee programs are beneficial for student achievement.

  16. Counselor’s hidden agenda in advisement, School Grade • When advising in the 6-12 combination school long term goals are a big part of the school grade. • Student success equates to school grades success.

Advisement for Academic Achievement links to school grade We offer “Acceleration,” High School courses, to 8th Graders: • As a motivational and drop out prevention tool to start earning high school credits. • Opportunity for the student to be a completer in multiple CTE classes and Industry Certifications. • Offers opportunity for future high school schedule to allow for Dual Enrollment and take AP courses.

Middle School Requirements • Pass three year long courses for Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies. • Pass a half year, semester of PE. • Career Class (embedded in the 8th grade US History) • Complete a 4 year high school planner online with FL CHOICES • Take semester of Civics and take Civics ECO worth 30% of grade.

Middle Grades Requirements NEW PROPOSED • See handout – DRAFT bill language • 1003.4156 – General requirements for middle grades promotion • Algebra 1 EOC constitutes 30% of the student’s final course average • For high school credit • Student must pass the course with EOC results • To graduate • Student must pass the EOC or earn a comparative score

Middle Grades PromotionS. 1003.4156, F.S. • To be promoted to grade 9, successful completion of • Beginning in 2012-2013, students enrolled in high school Geometry or Biology must take the EOC • EOC performance constitutes 30% of the student’s final course grade • Passing grade must be earned to earn high school credit • Beginning in 2012-2013, one course must be at least a one-semester civics education course • Beginning in 2013-2014, a student must take the Civics EOC and EOC performance constitutes 30% of the student’s final course grade • See new proposed language on transfer (c) – this will most likely be changed again but the intent should remain Students enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, or Biology must take the EOC and are not required to take the corresponding grade-level FCAT.

Advisement for HS Starts Early in Middle School • It is important that high school graduation requirements are known by the student and parents early on in the middle school students’ journey. • This information is given to our students and parents at the students 6th grade orientation and each school year at open house, posted on website and in the students’ planners.

  23. Planning for the Future: Graduation requirements for Cohort • It is given to the student when completes the high school planner on FL Choices and when registering for high school with the School Counselor and at the 8th the grade High School Registration night for Parents' and students.
