  1. A Model for the Perception of Tonal Melodies Dirk-Jan Povel Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information (NICI)

  2. Overview • This paper presents a concise description of OPTM • It’s a computational model for the On-line Processing of Tonal Melodies.

  3. OPTM: On-line Processing of Tonal Melodies

  4. Key Finder 1) The stabilities of the 12 tones in the major key in the (harmonic) minor key. 2) The activation of each of the 24 keys is determined as the sum of the stabilities of the input notes. 3) The key with the highest activation is selected as the key of the piece.

  5. Chord Recognizeruses the successive segments as windows in whichchords are being identified First step:Bottom-up processing: Activation of chord templates

  6. Chord RecognizerSecond step: accounting top-down information • The KeySpace • The Piston Table

  7. Chord Recognizer • Third step: finding the maximally activated chord • Fourth step: towards the identification of a single chord, Anchoring.
