  2. Details • Dates: Every Monday (Until end of Term 3 /Early Term 4) • Venue: New Town Primary School • Time: 3.30pm – 4.30pm • Subject: Mathematics • Level & Class: Primary 3, Weakest Class • Class Size: 10-15

Mission: To Mould Newtons Of The 21st Century • To provide free yet high standard tuition for the poor, both financially and academically • To ensure that they will be able to catch up with their work • To stimulate their life-long interests in Mathematics, and to nurture them to be earnest and independent learners, finding solutions initiatively. Vision/Rationale:

What their school teachers can’t do: 1) Their school teachers are very busy and do not have much time to provide extra lessons for these few students who are not able to catch up with their work. 2) Their school teachers can’t afford to slow down their pace of teaching just for these few students to catch up with their work, as they have to cover the entire syllabus set by the Ministry of Education.

  5. 3) These students may be too shy to consult their teachers when they meet any problems. 4) Their school teachers are not very close to the students in terms of relationships because of the generation gap.

  6. What we can do: 1) We can afford to provide extra lessons for these students as the class size is very small. 2) We can afford to slow down our pace of teaching as we only have to concentrate more on the topics that they are weaker in. 3)We can play games with them during classes to stimulate their interests for Mathematics. After finish teaching every topic, we will have a competitive quiz, with prizes to be won.

  7. 4) They will be more daring to consult us as we are more like their “elder brothers” instead of their teachers. 5) We are students too, thus we can understand them better than their school teachers. Also, we are of the same generation, thus we know what are their likes and dislikes.

  8. Why this school and this class??? • It is the former primary school of two of our members. • The weakest class is the class that needs the most help academically. • We want to develop their interests for studying and make sure that these students do not give up hope.

  9. Plain talking is useless. So let us proceed on to our…… Action Plan!!!

  10. Critical Thinking Skills Fundamentals / Basics Interest For Mathematics

Interest For Mathematics • Without an interest for Mathematics, these students will not take initiative to study • Their teachers and parents have to constantly ask them to study, they may not be able to do so all the time • Ultimately, the students have the choice of choosing whether they want to study or not. • We hope to develop the students’ interests for Mathematics by playing Mathematics games with them.

  12. Fundamentals/Basics • The basics that they have to know to solve Mathematical problems are the concepts, namely the 4 operational signs. • We hope to teach them in a fun way so that they will not be bored. • We will try to use a wide variety of simple yet efficient teaching materials, materials that the students have at home so that they can self-teach, self-learn, and self-revise without us.

Critical Thinking Skills • The students must be able to apply their knowledge flexibly, not absorbing and regurgitating their knowledge without thinking about and understanding it. • We hope to nurture these students into critical thinkers, asking thought-provoking questions, so that we, both teachers and students, can teach less and learn more.

Timeline Prelim Judging Semi-final Judging Final Judging Start of Project End of Project May/June: 1 session Holidays Late Term 3 / Early Term 4 March: Discussing with mentor with regards to the PowerPoint and lessons. April: 2 sessions The students have practical and oral examinations for the other 2 weeks July: 2 sessions Youth Day + Teacher: On leave

  15. Lesson Outline (until 4th lesson) • 1st Lesson • 1)Icebreakers • 2)Help them with their school work. (Multiplication) • 3) Class activities: • ~Mental Sums • ~Recitation of Multiplication Table • 2nd Lesson • 1)Help them with their school work. (Division) • 2)Reinforce the workings of the long division method

  16. 3rd Lesson (14 Apr) • 1) Mini quiz • 2) Revision on Multiplication & Division • Projected 4th Lesson (21 Apr) • 1) Go through Quiz Answers • 2) Revision on Multiplication & Division • 3) Competitive Quiz on 4 Operational Signs • *We will split the students into 2 groups and give them a quiz, which they must discuss and complete as a group. This will enable them to think critically and also build on their teamwork. The group who finishes the quiz within the time allocated and with the most number of correct answers will win prizes.

  17. Targets • To improve their grades, to be measured in marks • Make sure that these students will not be afraid anymore to ask questions and seek advice when they meet problems. • Make sure that all of these students will not be in the weakest class again next year.

  18. Survey Questions: • Why are they poor in Mathematics? • Do they like Mathematics? Why? • Do they have any tuition teachers? • Are they afraid to consult their teachers when they meet problems?
