  1. World War 1 Timeline The U.S. enters the war after learning of Germany’s plan to have Mexico attack the U.S. Germany and England set up Blockades on the others ports. Germany uses poison gas for the first time in the war. Fighting ends on November 11 at 11 a.m. Francis Ferdinand, from Austria, is assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. 1919 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 Russian Communists overthrow the government and appoint Lenin as the New Leader of Russia. Germany officially starts the war by declaring war on Russia, and France. The U.K. then declares war on Austria and Germany. Russia signs a Treaty with Germany. The treaty of Versailles is signed between the Allies and Germany officially ending the war. The Battle of the Sommes takes place in France with England losing 60,000 men in one day.

  3. Important people from the U.S. • The General of the U.S. army during World war one was General John J Pershing. He led the Americans to many decisive victories during the war. He was able to keep most of the Americans from the front lines of the battle. • The President of America during WWI was Woodrow Wilson. He is known for keeping America neutral throughout most of the war.

  4. Important French People • Joseph Joffre, Ferdinand Foch, and Philippe Pétain were all military leaders for France during the war. Each one played a unique role in contributing to the War. Joffre was the most senior French officer while Petain was considered a national hero. Foch ended up helping lead the Allied troops to victory over Germany.

  5. Important British People • Some important British people include: Sir Charles Townshend, Sir Christopher Cradock, and Winston Churchill. Churchill is known for serving as prime minister during WW2, but he also served as head of Britain’s navy and a battalion commander in World War 1.

  6. German People in WW1 • Germany had many key people in the war such as: Kaiser Wilheim II, Arthur Zimmerman, Alfred Von Tirpitz, Max von Baden, and Paul von Hindenburg. Kaiser Wilheimwas the emperor of Germany at the start of WW1 and basically started the War. He was replaced by Max von Baden towards the end who eventually played a role in the eventual Armistice and peace treaty.

German People (cont.) • Arthur Zimmerman is the man known for the “Zimmerman Telegraph” which eventually was what got America into the war. • Paul von Hindenburg was considered a national hero in Germany for most of the war because of his victories early in the war against Russia. He led the Germans to Victory in the Tanneburg Battle which is considered one of their greatest victories.

  8. ImportantRussians • Nicholas II was the tsar of Russia at the start of the war. He was murdered by the Bolshevics who took over the government and signed a treaty with Germany taking Russia out of the war.

  9. Other Important People • Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s(Austria) death in 1914 was the unofficial start of World War I. • GavriloPrincip (Serbia) assassinated Franz Ferdinand starting the war when he was only a teenager.
