  3. Aperture Mechanism In optics, a diaphragm is a thin opaque structure with an opening (aperture) at its centre. The role of the diaphragm is to stop the passage of light. An aperture stop, limits the brightness (or amount) of light reaching the focal plane passing through the aperture.

  4. F – number (aka f-ratio, f-stop, focal ratio, or relative aperture Refers to the diameter of the “entrance pupil” (like your eye) in relation to the focal length of the lens.

  5. Depth of Field • Comparison of: • f/32 (smaller opening) (top-left corner) and • f/5 (larger opening) (bottom-right corner) Conclusion: the lower f-number, the more blurred your background.
