  1. Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2007 Homemade Ecosphere By Ho Fung College Chan Hei Ting SHEERA Lo Tin Long KYAN Lau Hiu Ching TRACY

  2. Commercial Our “ecosphere” A simple version of our earth

  3. Why did we design an Ecosphere?

  4. Glass/Plastic Bottle Duckweeds (Producer) Decayed leaf (Dead organic matter) Stream water Snail (Consumer) Shrimp (Consumer) Algae (Producer) Bacteria (Decomposer) ECOSPHERE: Our Set Up

  5. Algae & Duckweeds Duckweeds Algae Algae

  6. Shrimps & Snails Large Stream Snail Large Stream Snail Shrimp Shrimp

  7. Semi-decayed leaf

  8. Collect solution from ecosphere Transfer solution to a beaker Appearance of bacteria after incubation for 3 days Gently daub on agar plate Bacterial Culture

  9. 5 areas of investigation • Population of consumers • Amount of duckweed • Air-to-water ratio • Size of Bottle • Light Intensity

  10. Population of consumers Data 1 * The dead shrimps are removed

  11. Population of consumers Data 2 * The dead shrimps are removed

  12. 1 Shrimp + 2 Snails / 1 shrimp + 0 Snail

  13. Amount of duckweeds >15 days Data 3 1 shrimp + 2 Snails

  14. Duckweed (100% covering water surface)

  15. Air-to-water ratio Data 4 1 shrimp + 2 Snails >14 Days

  16. Air-to-water ratio=1:3

  17. Size of Bottle Data 5 1 shrimp + 2 Snails

  18. The bigger the bottle, the longer the ecosphere survives.

  19. Light intensity Data 6 1 shrimp + 2 Snails > 15 Days

  20. Diffused sunlight

  21. Improvement Why do we add the land environment? To make it more close to the nature !!

  22. NEW Set Up • Glass bottle of 6 Liters • Land: water: air Ratio= 1:3:1 • Inner container • Garden soil • Small plants • Small animals

  23. Organisms • Water: duckweeds, algae, shrimps, pond snails • Land: snail, slug, earthworm, millipede
