  1. Important Geographic Concepts These are Important Concepts that underpin Geography…..we can call these IGC’s.You need to know them well and how to use them appropriately…..

  2. The position of something in terms of distance and direction. Location can be an advantage or a constraint e.g living near an airport.

  3. How far away or apart people or features are.It may be measured in terms of length, travel time or cost e.g. Auckland is 2000km, 3 hours or $300 from Sydney.

  4. A measure of the ease of movement of people or objects. Location and distance affect accessibility which may alter as as result of technological change. How easy is it to get to?

  5. The spatial distributions of features that can be observed and interpreted. They are the results of processes. e.g. many Asians live in Auckland while few live in Invercargill. This is the result of migration.

  6. A sequence of related actions that modify and maintain the environment e.g. convection currents in the earths mantle cause the tectonic plates to move, pressure builds up and is released as an earthquake.

  7. A unit of space defined by selected phenomena eg. relief. The surface of the earth may be divided into separate regions e.g. Monsoon Asia

  8. Where elements of the natural and cultural environment affect each other producing patterns. This is a two way action

  9. A normal process that occurs in both the natural and cultural environments. It occurs in different places at different rates and times. Some are predictable while others are not.

  10. The environment can be viewed as an interacting system. A system has inputs, processes throughputs or outputs and feedback of energy, material and ideas.

  11. People living in groups develop a common way of life and culture. Culture includes people’s values and ideas.

  12. This is the way people view and interpret their environment e.g. the way they see something. Perceptions may change over time.

  13. This is the natural and cultural world that surrounds us. We are constantly interacting with these environments. Environment

  14. This is the potential for long term maintenance of well-being. Sustainability for humans has environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Sustainability

  15. How well do you know your geographic concepts? “Once Upon A Time…….” Your task is to write a story using all 13 of the Important Geographic Concepts….make sure you use each IGC at least once and underline it in your story…….and try to use each word in its geographic context…. Regions Culture Interaction Perception Systems Accessibility Change Distance Pattern Process Location Environment Sustainability
